Default Directional vs. Non-Directional Tires

I did a search on this topic and didn't find much discussion. It's a bit early to even think about replacing tires, but it's going to eventually happen to all of us. What is the major difference between directional and non-directional tires (besides the obvious). For the day-to-day driver, is it really that beneficial, or should we go with a less expensive non-directional performance tire. Thanks for your input...

never heard of a non directional performance tire, also didnt really know they were more expensive, the draw back is that you cant easily rotate tires, which doesnt matter since sizes are staggered anyway.
