Do I really need a 10.5" wide rear?
Some of you might've seen me post that my current wheels aren't clearing my new AP Brakes (6/4 piston) in the rear. So I'm in the market for new wheels. The wheels I really want, are looking like they'll need to be ordered with a 3-6 month wait, so I need to find a fix in the interim and this has been driving me crazy since last Friday.
Lets establish the basics.
Most of what is reasonably price, attractive and track worthy, not to mention in stock tends to run 18x9 and 18x10 combos. The fronts will fit all tire combinations I want to run, but the rears will not allow me to run a 315/30/18. I can run a NT01, A048, Pilot Sport Cup, etc.. in that size and it would be a good match for a 265/35/18 front.
The problem is, there's a lot of 295/30/18 sizes for DOT-R, but that's a small rolling diameter (trying to stay at 25.5" and taller) and makes the rear smaller than my front, which is bad. If I want to run a 295/35/18, I'm pretty much back to extreme performance street tires. I figure I'm at least 2 years away from being good enough to justify something like A048's or NT01's in the 315 width. Would spend my first year running something like the Azeni RT-615 or BFG G-Force T/A. Both of which I can get in a size suitable for a 9/10 wheel combo. I can even run the NT01 in a 275/40 and 275/35 combo. Just not sure if they'd provide enough traction if I went ***** out WOT.
So should I opt for the 9/10 combo and worry about dedicated track wheels for the big rubber later? Or should I keep searching and trying to find that 9.5/10.5 combo that really works? It goes against my better judgement to consider squeezing a 315 onto a 10" wheel, but that's my other option. Or do the smaller section width DOT-R tires really grip enough that I could keep traction with a 275-295 rear?
Lets establish the basics.
- This winter, my car should be supercharged with a custom HKS setup and I already have the Quaife / 3.917 combo.
- I want to run a 275 width all-season tire for winter. Most of my winter driving is dry weather or non-freezing rain and I want to maximize my traction, not snow performance. There will be few situations if any where I will have to drive in the snow.
- I want to get serious about track events. Get heavy into Auto-X and doing some of the organized road course events. Hence my reason for purchasing the brakes.
- When I get my new summer wheels, I will be running a 305/30/19 rear tire. Its too expensive to do more than 1 or 2 track events with as a new set of rears will be ~$1000. So I need wheels that I can wrap with less expensive, but sticky rubber for those days.

Yeah, it sucks that 19" tires are so spendy plus they dont really offer and TRUE performance tires in 19". Id say though to find a 10.5" rear - this gives you the option of running a wide range of tires and not worry.
BTW, I have a set of 18" 9.5/10.5 TE37s Im selling

Enkei wheels offer 9.5/10.5 combo, they are light weight and affordable (compared to most other 9.5/10.5 combo's). I just recently ran an SCCA event with my enkei wheel setup and I couldn't have been happier. I have 18x10.5 front and back with 265/35 RT-615's. this setup causes the car to be very neatrual and for me I love it. Just some suggestions. Not sure what you consider affordable. Also the enkei's are always selling on the forums! Good luck.
You could go with Pirelli P-Zero Corsa System. They have a 255/35/19 and a 295/30/19 for 9 and 10" tread widths and they are R-compound tires good for track use. Appropriate rim sizes would be 19X9, and 19X10. Get a set of one of the ADVAN wheels. They are light and have massive brake clearance. A 315 on a 10" wheel is not an option. 295 is as wide as you want to run on a 10". Yo uwon't need a 305 or a 315 tire for a supercharged setup.

Something like the ADVAN TCII would be ideal, but I haven't found anybody with it in stock yet. Ultimately, I'm just worried about buying a set with a 10" rear for now and in 2 years, finding myself needing to buy a new set of rims, in addition to new tires. :\
