Cool using 2 sets of wheel lock? why not etch the VIN

Howdy,

A few days ago, someone mentioned that they use 2 sets of wheel lock? how much additonal protection would that offer? Seems like if some low life had a wheel lock removal kit and really wants to steal your rims. Would the extra set of lock make a significant difference? Opinions?

If thiefs intend to sell them after then stole the rims. Why don't we just etch the VIN on the rims? I got an old rim from my last car. I'll try to get my hand on an engraver and let you guys know how it turns out. If anyone here is experience with metal engraving, please let me know if this is feasible.

Thanks

I engraved mine with my VIN.

Dremel makes a great engraver. Do the engraving on the inside of the wheel on the backside of the spokes.

Criminals will still steal them cause they haveno clue they are engraved, but you stand a chance at recovery or getting the criminal nabbed....

it sure doesn't hurt to engrave.

cool. When you engraved your VIN on the back side of your rims, how much metal came off? was it enought to require rebalancing?

i have no experience with metal engraving, is there a book or guide that i can get to walk me through the process?

the engraver is basically a pen like tool with a very sharp carbide tip that vibrates at a high frequency.

no metal is removed in the process... it is just distorted slightly to make an impression...

don't worry about balance.

if your buying stolen rims, the price and method of sale should tip it off... the vin shouldnt matter, as no one could see it without removing the tire. and most likely its easily filled, if the theif even takes a notice that its there.

wheel locks can be removed, but as I understand it requires a special tool and some hammering, if hammering 4 lugs off doesnt attract attention, hopefully hammering 20 will, I know theres no chance Id sleep through some guy outside hammering for 20 minutes.

at some point you gotta figure the crook is just not THAT stupid. no rims are worth enough to take that much time commiting a crime in the open making noise.
