I remember seeing this thread a few years ago. Thought it was really cool then and still do now haha.

EDIT- just saw the video posted above. I don't understand how the cap is coming off with just a "dollar store" magnet? I thought it was much more powerful than that?

I assume when you say ' very hard to get off', you mean without the key.

Where there's a will there's a way my friend...

Still a great deterrent, look tough as hell.

I think that these locks are a very good deterrent for the money. I've heard of a company that makes wheel locks that cost an arm and a leg, but they come with a guarantee that if your wheels get stolen they will replace them. Pretty confident/bold claim.

I'm with you on this one. I'd guess that 75%+ of the thieves out there don't know about this magnet "trick" to remove the cap. First glance is going to be a deterrent for most people... if they get the cap off, they still have a locking lug to get through as well. Too much work for most thieves.

Sub'd so I can find this thread easily after I get my new wheels

Im pretty sure its not really the strenghth of the magnet in the cap. From what i would guess it looke liks there is a moving mechanism that is engaged once the cap is put on. The key to remove it is probably just another magnet that moves the mech. inide to "unlock" the cap and reviel the wheel lock.

Dont quote me on that, but thats what makes the most sense to me.

You're correct.

I still think these a good option. Since they're not very common, most thieves won't even know that they're magnetically removed. Even fewer will know that any old magnet will work.

This reminds me of a topic a while back about locks.
If they can't get your wheels cause they are new they will just bust a few windows and while trying to get your wheels off they will leave a mess behind if they can't get them. For a pro, there is no such thing as a lock that can't be opened.

Sometimes its better for them to just get your wheels and leave the rest of the car undamaged and just let insurance take care of new wheels.
