Default How to rid the rash

I bought my Z used and unfortunately there is some curb rash on the driver and passenger rears. After reading the painting stock rims thread on here i decided that i might hit my rims with gunmetal grey. Before i do that however i would like to try and fix some of the rash. I've read the trick with the bondo but didnt know if that is the appropriate course of action. If i painted them would you really notice it without trying to fix it? Any other helpful suggestions would be nice, i can take some pics if you need but obviously tomorrow. thanks

I just painted my OEM 06 wheels this weekend. There were a bunch of scratches from rocks and stuff hitting them, as well as rash on 3 out of the 4. I went with Gloss Black, and used some sand paper. Turned out really well. Can't see the rashes unless you're really close...

Side note. I didn't sand to get the rashes out. Just to get most of the OEM silver and clear off, as well as rough up the metal, so the black has a good surface to stick to.

Will post some closeups tomorrow after work. It's 9pm here right now.

Looking forward to some pics. It would be nice if I can just sand a little and then hit it with some paint without doing the bondo but if its got to be done i want to do it right.

Yea that is actually the exact website I viewed. Does it seem like a sufficient fix to you guys?

I've never repaired a wheel myself, but that scuff you have looks similar to the one the guy is working on in his writeup. Depends on how much all those products cost he's using, but its probably worth a shot considering it cost $100 + to have your wheel refinished at a shop.

THat can be fixed with epoxy fill. Several steps involved. Hours required are prohibitive.

Possible solution. Buy a refurbished wheel.

What the hell i might just try it . I can appreciate a project to do. Im going to go see how much another wheel is and then make a decision. Hell if im going to buy another rim i might as well try to fix it no?

knowlegable members have refurberished OEM wheels:

Sand
Primer
Paint
Clear coat

The result is equal to the number of hours you put into it.

I was obviously joking.

I think you're on the right track, just sand them down a bit and repaint and no one will be the wiser.

There are several threads on the subject as well for reference.

Driver's side Front
There are a couple gouges on the wheel, around the 10 and 11 o'clock positions, but the rashes are pretty much invisible.

Same wheel, just closer to the gouges.

Driver's side Rear
Rash at the 9 o'clock position

Same wheel

Passenger Rear
Small rash, barely noticeable, at 11 o'clock, by the valve stem.

Passenger front
Here's what happened when I got cut off by a cop...

Same wheel

Hope that helps...

The rims came out nice and yea the paint pretty much covers up the rash marks. Thats a shame though with what happened to the passenger front . I think i might try out that bondo trick and then do paint but not sure. Ill be happy to make another thread with updates when I do decide to fix em'. Thanks for the suggestions and i appreciate posting those pics
