Default TPMS Rebuild Kit

Hi!

First off, yes, I did read the TMPS FAQ.

I'm about to buy new tires from www.discounttiredirect.com and they give me the option to purchase a "TPMS Rebuild Kit". Furthermore, they have a warning dialog stating "Warning: Using standard valve stem parts in your TPMS Sensor will damage the sensor."

My question is, do I really need to spend an extra few bucks to buy a "TPMS Rebuild Kit"?

From what I understand, the TPMS on the Z is mounted on the rim (I'm just replacing my tires, not the rims), and not on the tire/valve stem. So...sounds to me like I don't need the "TPMS Rebuild Kit" (or any other kind of TPMS "kit" my local tire shop might try to sell me). Am I correct?

Thanks!!!

Nope. The TPMS is the valve stem. Look at your valve stems, they have a hex head on the outer sleeve. If you unscrew that, the unit drops into the rim. Rebuild kit isn't a bad idea because it gives you new gaskets, etc.

Rebuild what? It's a sealed unit. If there's a problem with a TPMS sensor, you just replace it.

the rebuild kit is primarily, from the description on the website, new washers, and maybe stem caps. they refer to it as the "wearable items" in the sensor, and since each wheel is a whopping 3 bucks, I can't see it being much more than just that.

it's not a rebuild kit in a sense that it includes fresh electronics or anything, or that it's intended to replace internals within each sensor.

Yep. Just like taking engine components apart that have gaskets. Replace them while you're there to prevent leakage, etc. cheap insurance.

I just got this pushed on me as well. I'm wondering if it's worth the extra bucks or not.
