Snow Tire Sizing/Flex/Tireware questions
I have been reading posts of people looking for snow tires, and I am in the market right now.
My requirements
1) I want the best snow/ice tracation
2) I would not mind slightly taller tires for better clearance
3) I don't want TCS to go "wacky"
4) I don't care about correct speedo
People have posted tire size rules to the effect of using either
1) shorter fronts than rears
2) same size fronts as rears
Based on my previous experience, I want Blizzaks again, and I have decided on WS-50 even though they are soft in the dry. The problem I am having is with sizing.
Luke at Tirerack was kind enough to help me out today to answer some questions, and he is definitely of the position that fronts MUST be shorter than rears unless the tires are summer/racing tires which have little flex. He says that on their test G35 that the soft WS-50's cause problems with traction control if the size is the same. His recommendation is to go with the 225/50/17 front and 225/55/17 rears (same as everyone else with WS-50).
I looked through the 350Z Service CD, but I could not find specific information about the TCS/VDC algorithm for controlling wheel speed.
My thoughts were that on my previous FWD drive I had same-sized fronts and rears so that I could rotate the snow tires for better life. Luke is saying that on RWD vehicles that the wear will be more even (sounds logical) so I don't need to rotate.
I was actualy planning on going to 225/55/17 WS-50's all-around (on my 17x8 Kosei S6C's), and I found lowbeeZ is using 225/55/17's succesfully, but his are Bridgestone M3 (high performance/less flex) snow tires. I actually am concerned about the TCS as well as tire wear.
Does anyone have any words of advice besides, "Suck it up and buy what you want."
