Front Wheels Hitting Fender's Front Shield

Hey what's up guys? Well I have a question that maybe a few of you may have experience with. Basically, my front wheels and tires are pretty wide. This caused the tires to grind into the front plastic shield. Any ideas on replacement shields for aftermarket wheels/tires, removing shield completely or modifying current factory shield to avoid this? Thanks in advance.

it sounds to me that you have wheels with really high offset........above +38 or so....

read here

and here
https://my350z.com/forum/brakes-and-...ion-101-a.html

post pics of wheels and if you can, grab a flash light and read the back of the wheel.......look for a number that says ET40 or just +40, etc...etc..that will be the wheels offset.

also, what is the tire size?

im sure one look with a pic will tell.....

This should be interesting..

just take them off

Post specs please.

Include wheel size , width and offset
Tire size
Suspension info, if you are lowered/camber.

Thanks...that looks like a good read.

Wheel specs: Front 18x9.5 +30 Rear 18X9.5 +30
Tires: Front 275/35/18 Rear 275/40/18
no spacers
on coilovers not lowered much more than I was when factory due to body kit being to low.

JasonZ-YA Sep 27, 2011 07:20 AM

^ as i suspected...thats too high offset (+30) with way to wide a rim...

you need spacers son...

i bet your car looks all stock mustangish...with recessed wheels, common to the fender??

hahaha...you are correct sir...only for the rear wheels...the front aren't as recessed but aren't flush either. Although, I've never looked into spacers due to long term strain on the suspension...will spacers alleviate the rubbing up against the front dust shield? I'm wondering if maybe tire size is just too wide for front or if spacers will do the trick.

You refered to front "plastic" dust shield. Are you refering to the fenderliner?. I know the dustshields are metal because I cut mine

It's part number 3 on trademotion.com:

I would guess he means then plastic under fender line. If his wheels were making contact with the metal brake dust shield right behind the rotor there would be other serious issues.....

DavesZ#3 Sep 28, 2011 10:10 AM

^^ Yeah, wrong title. Brake dust shields are rotor-sized and on the spindle, not the fender liners.

dragon11689 Sep 28, 2011 10:40 AM

Blah...bad title. Another reason why multitasking is a bad idea. Not sure what i was thinking when I did that since I clearly didn't describe the part as brake dust shield in my description. Sorry about the misleading title guys. It's the front shield in front of the front tires but directly behind the bumper. It ripped to shreds over time from the tire hitting it at high speeds while turning. Although it doesn't look like it would touch when I look at it from outside the vehicle at a stand still with the wheel turned.

dragon11689 Sep 30, 2011 07:18 AM

Ok...so I'm looking at the design of my front bumper and picturing what may be happening at high speed that can cause the front shield to tear and shred...by the way this is not the fender liner which is the rear plastic piece in the fender...it is the piece directly in front of it...the jp vizage n type bumper has 3 air ducts...one directly in the middle that is open to the radiator area...then there is 1 on each side...the side air ducts are allowing in air through the sides that push this plastic piece closer to the tire as your driving...hence, causing the tire to hit the plastic piece and shred the crap out of it...the factory bumper only had the middle air duct which would not replicate the same issue...so I have to find a way to get the new front shields supported better so that this wont happen...any of you guys with aftermarket bumpers have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

dragon11689 Sep 30, 2011 07:21 AM

By the way, can the moderators change the title to "Front Wheels Hitting Fender's Front Shield" since fender liner would be the wrong part of the car that I'm describing. I was trying to but can't figure out where to change the title from here. Thanks.

i have 9.5 +15 with 275 tire up front with no rubbing. camber is like -1.5*. just get a set of 15mm spacers and you'll be all set.

Chebosto Sep 30, 2011 10:15 AM

if it's toward the front, mark where wheel /tire is hitting, remove said wheel, with heatgun, heat up plastic fenderliner in place and while not too hot (prior to melting) use baseball bat or basketball to push in and create semi-sphere void where the tire will no longer rub.

if it's rubbing on the inside firewall (metal) your options are a) either hammer it out (not really recommended) or b) buck up kiddo and deal with it or c) get new setup

+1

I also know of several people who have the middle portion of their fender linings cutout to run super aggressive wheel/suspension setups.

OP add some pics as well, it will be good for future reference..

You can lose around 8mm (1/3 ") inside by switching just the tires to 245/40
that could be just enough and you wouldn't need a spacer. I think 275/35 is way too much tire up front anyway.
