I dont take people with automatic trans, non drag cars, seriously. it's supposed to be a sports car.
imo auto is like a v6 mustang or camaro, blauahh... please stop making them.

...my 280Z that had over 285,000 was manual, all my Fiats were manual, all my Hondas were manual (including motorcycles), all my other Datsuns were manual, one of the 4 different 350Z's I've owned (a Nismo) was manual...my latest 350Z, 2007 GTR is an automatic because it was the way it was born, and I bought it used with only 7500 miles...however, I prefer not to spill my coffee & I like driving somewhat normally until I wake up a bit...which the auto allows me easily to do!

Unbelievable
I posted a response on this thread EIGHT YEARS AGO - check the first page of the thread. I can't believe this conversation is still alive.
I'm in my 60's now, but I still have the Z, it's still an auto, and it's still fast and fun. A lot of (damaged) vets drive automatics because, well, we have to.
. . . and some of us have gone mach 2+ many times in our lives - well in excess of anything some so-called sports car purists will ever go.

To each his own, but the majority of the beliefs here regarding the 5AT are horribly antiquated and misinformed and, while they may still hold true for some old musclecar, they have no basis in fact where modern autos are concerned. There IS a reason why pretty much no serious sportscar manufacturer uses a manual transmission anymore -- or why no drag racer with more than 2 functional brain cells would even consider using a manual. No human being ever on this planet can shift faster or more precisely than a good auto. And while the Nissan 5AT is an engineering marvel (over 100 patents applied for just on the transmission!) it does have its shortcomings --- but they are easily fixable for under $1200.
Get a good GTM valvebody upgrade and go ahead and upgrade your clutch packs while you're in there and suddenly your car gives up nothing in terms of putting power to the ground plus it will be faster and much more consistent in 1/4 mile times than a 6mt (assuming equal hp at the flywheel)! And if you are a regular drag-racing type you might as well go to a higher-stall converter. This cheap upgrade (cheaper than a good hiperf clutch -- assuming you skip the converter upgrade, which is really unnecessary unless you are running some serious 600hp+ power) also eliminates the shift "delay" (although if you know how to really drive a manually-shifted auto that isn't an issue anyway) and dramatically increases the crispness of both up and down shifts. That's what I love about my 5AT ZR --- I can put it in drive and not worry about traffic, clutches, etc when I want to, but then I can pop the shifter to the right and run with any mt-equipped car out there (assuming similar hp levels at the flywheel). And if I want to spend another $650 I can install paddle shifters! You get the best of both worlds!!!
Now if you are the racer-boy type who thinks it's cool to constantly have to deal with 19th-century technology (which is exactly what a manual transmission is -- antiquated, outdated technology imho) then by all means get a mt (and upgrade the clutch!). I don't mind driving a stick occassionally, but after 3+ decades of rowing gears manually there is absolutely nothing "cool" or "fun" or "more in control" about it anymore. If you are Michael Schumacher (which nobody on this forum is even within lightyears of his skill level, despite what your ego may want to think, lol) then perhaps there might be a marginal advantage to using a manual. But in the real world there are no performance advantages of a properly prepped manual & clutch over a properly prepped automatic. But don't take my word for it -- go ask Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, McLaren, Audi, etc..... they all saw the light years ago!!
But bottom line: Drive whatever you like and you can afford!! I don't think less of a driver/car because he chooses to row gears, and I know any gear-rower dissing on autos is either a child or an ignorant fool who is just repeating garbage he read somewhere. So do whatever works best for YOU and your application.

6MT track here...
I don't see myself in an auto anytime soon. I literally hate taking long trip in auto cars, I tend to get sleepy in them. I guess I'm just used to driving manual ever since 16 yrs old even on heavy traffic... my only "complaint" was my last car which was an STi (ACT Xtreme 6 puck clutch), that was a PITA on traffic congestions.
The closes thing I would get to an auto car would be a DCT w/ paddle shifters, unless it's a family van/SUV

My '04 has the 6 speed manual. I'm 63 years old and this type of car has always been a dream of mine. As of a couple of years ago my dream came true. The cool factor with the drop top and the 6 speed is just way off the charts.
