Thumbs up Official 2008 Karting thread

so this thread will be used for the 2008 karting season.

As of now, let's plan on doing 2 event per month...maybe 1 weekday, and 1 weekend?

Why:
1) It's fun
2) It develops great driving habits and will make you a better street driver!
3) Competition (to see who's the fastest among the VQ owners)
4) meet fellow Z owners, hang out,...

Where:
Sykart in Tukwilla
7450 West Valley Hwy
Tukwila, WA 98188
TEL: 425-251-5060
http://www.sykart.com/maps.html

2008 *proposed * Schedule:

Every other 1st Sunday @2pm and 3rd Thursday @8pm

2/21/08 -Thurs @8pm
3/2/08 -Sun @2pm
3/20/08 -Thurs @8pm
4/6/08 -Sun @2pm

Rules/Competition:
*we may try doing a point system as a 'championship' series...so we'll have to figure out how we'll organize this.
ideas for the rules:
1) the following amount of time is added to all subsequent events:
1st - 0.6s
2nd - 0.4s
3rd - 0.2s
*time additions do not keep adding (if you get 1st place, then still get another 1st place, your next session you still only add 0.6s). The time penality is removed if you finish last place w/ more than 4 competitors.
2) your best 8 finishes count towards the championship points (this way you don't have to make every event. If you do more than 8 events, your lowest events are dropped)
3) Points system for each day are based off of the top time of day (from our group)

your points = 10*[(top time)/(your time)]

ie. top time is 35.0s, your time is 36.0s
you points = 10*(35/36) = 9.72 points

4) Overall point adders:
Fastest time of year = 10 pts
2nd fastest time of year = 5 pts
3rd Fastest time of year = 2 pts
4th fastest time of year = 1 pts
most consistent times for 8 events = 5 pts
smallest difference of fast lap to average lap for 1 session = 5 pts
Wearing Medium Polo w/ popped collar to every event = 100 points!

Top 10 times:
1) First350 @ 35.677 s
2) Triple8Sol @ 35.740 s
3) Drivesolo @ 35.821 s
4) Showtime @ 36.191 s
5) Vstrizheus @ 37.854 s
6) warmmilk @ 37.872 s
7)
8)
9)
10)

*I'll update it as more people give ideas and we figure out how we want to do this.

This is Triple8Sol posting from my homie's house. I'm in, but I'd prefer weekdays. It's snowboarding season, so I'm guaranteed to be up in the mountains on the weekends.

if no one else says otherwise, we can shift more of the days to Thursday and some other weekday...

*once autoX starts for me, weekends fill up fast - so I like weekdays too.

Thursdays work best for me too.

Suggestions for a scoring systems

FIA scoring system
1st: 10 points
2nd: 8 points
3rd: 6 points
4th: 5 points
5th: 4 points
6th: 3 points
7th: 2 points
8th: 1 point

Generally there are no more than 10 karts on the track at any given time.

OR

SCCA AutoX scoring
top time = 100 points, every time is calcaulated as a percentage of the fastest time of that day for our group. This will inevitably put a "target" on the backs of the drivers currently leading the series and may balance out the running.

If we're gonna play it like GT racing, adding weight will be a problem. I've spoken to more than one guy there and they said that weight between a small guy and a big guy is far less of an advantage than ability. Besides, if one guy were to win 3 races back-to-back, how are we gonna get 60 lbs in his kart, not to mention that putting it in would be a problem.

I'd say instead of weight, add a time penalty to the top 3 times for the next race:

1st place: +0.6
2nd place: +0.4
3rd place: +0.2

Times stay w/ you throughout the season unless you end up in last place(requiring 4 or more competitors) where you can remove 0.2 for each time you end up last (in adjusted time, not scratch time).

As for running a series, I dunno if we're ready for that. Seems like there's about 7 of us that are down w/ it. For a few of us competition is something we really like, for other, just going out to drive around w/ out the pressure of competing is something they enjoy more. I wouldn't want what were doing to keep anyone from coming out to join us.

Here's a crazy @$$ suggestion: There are a couple of other car clubs / local forums that go out there regularly (S2000, Lotus, Hatchi Rokus, etc.). I'd like to see how our top 10 guys do against there top 10. Kinda like an all forums constructor's competition. We'd most likely get our butts handed to us since it looks like the S2K guys have some seriously good guys and driving an AE86 around is practically like go karting, but I'm sure we'd all like to see how we stack up against others platforms. Input on this idea?

i agree with the time system also, sound like a more practical plan than adding weight

i'm out for the forum to forum comp though, i'd just be dragging the z's down (unless a miracle happens and some how i get really really good all of the sudden), cause basically, 3 of u autocross alot, and showtime (haulinZ) used to work there, so me and vasiliy are at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to experience, and our times are nearly identical

im all for competition ... but i would say keep with within the forum... at least until we get a little better... if we aready know were gona get owned whats the point? that and im workin on losin a few pounds... haha the track was a little different from how it used to be when i worked there too... not too fond of the part they changed... i think thats where i was the slowest... but it is like a 2 second longer lap tho... i remember the top times were in the 32's when i was there... soo i kinda like that aspect of it...

My idea on this forum vs forum thing is not going into it thinking that we would be the best drivers and have the best chance of winning. My thought was going into the competition being the underdog. It's not all about the win, it's about the fight and taking care of business as a team. As a team everyone contributes regardless of his skill level. And everyone tries harder cuz there are others depending on each individuals performance. We help each other get better as a result cuz instead of just one mind thinking about how you're driving, there's 9 others that want to help you get better.

Also, if by some crazy way we do end up bettering the other teams, regardless of how small a victory, it'd be all the sweeter. We all wanna be Lewis Hamilton or Michael Schumacher but let's face it.... that's not possible. All we can hope for is to enjoy the fight and have fun doing it. Winning or being he best is only as satisfying as the challenge that it took to get there.

What sux about racing for fastest time is that you don't really need to race anybody. All you need is a clean piece of track to post you best lap(s) and you win. IMHO racing others wheel to wheel is a lot more fun. Perhaps it can be achieved by having slowest drivers start from the front and fastest from the back. Obviously it is not the way motoracing is normally done but I am on the side of having more fun than just racing for times.

^ We can try racing for position, but it'll turn into a dirty an chaotic race. It's not like autoracing where the price to pay is damagaing your car. It'll turn into bumper cars. The guys that work there won't be able to be effective refs, a lot of bumping still goes on when we're just racing for time.

I'd love to race for position, but how do we keep it clean? Or do we just say 'screw clean racing' and everyone takes their chances. If you get caught by the guys working there, then you're S.O.L.?

we can slip a 20 to the ref and see if he's willing to "look the other way"

I also prefer racing for position...it adds a whole new dimension that I don't get from AutoX or Track days.

So what if we just do a reverse grid each time...the grid is based off of each person's best time...points are dealt out for finishing position??

this way ppl won't sand bag (too much) b/c they'll be trying to get into 1st position...
