From what I've read, the GUI is different.

From the picture of the '06 console, it doesn't even look like there is a lid to cover the screen. I guess Nissan had way too many problems with that little Nav door.

Yep. The NAV door is completely gone. A little lip is added to the dash for glare reduction.

As isugoo also pointed out, GUI = Graphic User Interface, i.e. What you see on the screen; menus, service reminders etc.

That's pretty nice. Thanks for the info. I can't believe I didn't pick up on that in the billion or so '06 interior pix I saw! The door should never have been there in the first place, IMO.

The new GUI for the 06 is very sleek IMO. I wonder if this upgrade is just a simple firmware update way for the '05 and earlier people.

Let's see if our good friends at Performance Nissan can answer that for us.

Attached are a few pics taken from a new G35, which also got the same '06 updates.

Do you know what version of the map software is in the '06? The Zenrin website has version 6.4 for sale.

That's the newest version for 03-05 Zs. They don't seem to have the 06 yet.

The '06 NAV uses the 7.x series software first introduced for the Infiniti M-class.

Jason,
It won't work by simply sticking a 7.1 disc into the older model. I do know people who had to upgrade from the early v6.1 to the recent v6.4 needed a firmware update that was included in the kit. It is a seperate CD (that's right not DVD) in addition to the database DVD. I think getting a hold of the 7-series update CD is the key here. Hope that helps.

Here's a cut'n paste of my post at G35driver.com:
http://g35driver.com/forums/showthre...907#post805907

I downloaded and browsed through the new '06 Navi manual and was blown away by the number of enhancements. Wow! I want an upgrade very badly!

Here are just some of the enhancements I've noted:

- New GUI/Theme (obviously).
- More zoom (to 1/32 mile).
- Ability to adjust Birdview angle.
- Multiple split Screen modes (wayyy cool).
- Persistant Clock (it's always showing!).
- Able to access 'GPS info' and 'Where am I?' from the main INFO screen.
- Too many others to list!!!

I also noticed external functions such as Radio Control, Voice Recoqnition, Bluetooth and even the Tire Pressure Monitor were not supported for the G35 model. This is encouraging and something I had prayed for just before cracking the '06 manual. The implications is that no additional signals/lines and electronics were added for the '06 G35 NAV system. So maybe, just maybe, there is a glimpse of hope for a possible upgrade, which will surely require a firmware update and the new DVD database disc at the minimum. Most of you will readily point out the link/thread above stating 6.x and 7.x are not compatible. That is to be expected w.o. a proper firmware update. If however, the mainboard inside the new NAV has departed drastically from the '05 and earlier model, then we are all SOL.

Does anyone have the '06 service manual handy? My personal archive is only up to '05. I'd like to verify there were indeed no additional lines and boxes implemented for the new NAV system.

... more pics for your pleasure.

By the way ... thanks for chiming in Jason.

One other thing that might help solve this mystery is to check and see if the new NAV box is any different than the old NAV box. Surely the firmware will have been different, so I would expect the same of the part number. One would have to physically inspect the unit itself.

Edit: if the box remains essentially identical (i.e. same connector(s) and same pin configuration at the back), could someone order the new DVD drive (w. the disc) from Performance Nissan??? if so, how much? No refund of course!

Yup, I got a free navigation update (for Canadians only) so I ordered the 6.3 version. it came with 1 dvd data disc and 1 cd firmware.

I would purchase the new 7 version if it is compatabile with the 2003 stock nav.

Update: I called Zenrin and asked them if I ordered their 7.0 navigation software, could I install it on the 03-05 350Z and they told me straight out "No". The new navigation utilizes new hardware as well, so it is impossible to get the new 7.0 version if you have the old hardware. That sucks ;( the new navigation looks cool.
