Default What does feathering sound like???

Ok, well my friend gets in the car with me today, and as im coming to a stop he says, "wow, your car is loud" Im kinda like, umm wtf, i never really noticed it being loud. Its definitely coming from the tires, but im not sure whether it is the roaring refered to when feathering occurs. Could it just be that my tires are worn out, so theyre loud now. I have 12000 miles on my car. Can anyone explain to me what this tire feathering noise is like. Its loud right when im comming to a stop or slowing down. Not when im going fast on the freeway. Thanx

Bryan

Im wondering as well... I have 10500 miles on mine and its sounds like a 4x4 with mud tires as I come to a stop. WTF

I dont think its the "feathering".... I believe the "feathering" is when the inside of the tire is worn from bad alignment. Not to sure though!

When you decelerate below approx 35mph,you hear a sudden roaring sound that continues until you stop. i can only liken it to the noise my huge tires caused in my empty van when i drove on the freeway before i installed installation. its very loud and undeniable and sounds like nothing else. when you get feathering, you go "oooohhhh, that's feathering".

Its because it gradually changes so if you drive everyday the change was small but if you get an alignment or new tires you will immediately notice the difference.

yesiree, you have the infamous tire roar caused by front tire feathering. go to your dealer; you should get two new ones for free; i got mine with 20k mi and paid only 10% of cost of two new fronts.
Bryan, you have it, too.

when you are parked, turn your steering wheel as far as it will go - then get out and check out the inside edge of the tires. The first time I did this after I noticed the car was louder, the inside 2" of my tires were damn near bald.

Has this problem been fixed on '04s and 05s?

Robsan, no one knows. Some 04s are having feathering, expect 05s probably will as well.

Thats not "tire feathering". That is inside tire wear caused from negative camber. "Tire feathering" is when every other tread block is more worn than the previous one. I will see if I can find the pic again to show it.

Here is one pic where you can see the discoloration of everyother tread block or so on the inside:

Here is another Dr Bonz shot:

You should be able to feel that all the inner tread blocks are not the same and aren't smooth like the outside tread blocks.

On mine, i couldn't even see or feel a major difference on the tires, but the roaring was there all the same.

Trust me you both have tire feathering. Mine showed up around 11K miles and has now come back at 20K miles. If you wanna hear the difference, go to any Nissan dealership and ask to test drive one of their new Zs. Don't turn the radio when you're driving and listen to the car when you come to a stop from around 35-40 miles per hour. You'll notice in the new Z, you wont hear a thing. Now compare that to your car noise and you will clearly hear the difference.

And another thing, as for the 04 model, my buddy has a 04 Touring and his car started feathering around 10K miles and it is noticeably louder than mine.

You guys still don't get tire feathering. You do realize that good ole regular tire wear on the inside of your tires from negative camber can cause road noise right??? Don't assume it is automatically tire feathering, cause you know the saying, and I am certainly not an ***.

you obviously haven't had tire roar, which is different from "road noise".

Your right I haven't had tire roar, because I don't plan on letting it happen. What I don't like is someone posting a little bit about their problem and someone immediately continuing the "tire feathering" issue even though they have no idea if they really have it. I mean the term "tire feathering" is so over used it doesn't even have a definition any more. If you have any tire problem it MUST be feathering. I hear it is even happening on the back now.

According to the notice i got from nissan, which i still have, Nissan themselves connect the "tire roar" (their term) to "tire feathering" (again, their term). I honestly believe it is a matter of severity; i believe that if i would have continued driving on those tires, they would have begun to show those gross patterns posted earlier. Luckily, i learned about feathering on my350 just weeks before i noticed the noise, so when the roar began, i knew what it was, and even the nissan mechanic, when he drove the car and felt the tires, confirmed my suspicions of feathering, even though no gross signs were present on the tires.
