That sucks...I've been a valet for 3 years off and on while i've been going to school. that kind of attitude would get any valet fired no matter where they worked. those guys at south coast during christmas can rake in up to 500 bucks a day so i would never feel sorry for them. I worked at maggianos at south coast so i know how much those valets make. (great holiday cash) i hate hearing about bad valet experiences cuz i know there are a lot of places that treat cars better than you might give them credit for. I do understand that there are a lot more that don't. When a Z pulls up when i work i always talk to the person about there car and keep it close for them. (i'ved moved a**holes in lambos out of the front line for a cool person in a z) *rant over*
Dustin

PS i would have taken the 5 back...tip is a option for good service.(i always provide perfect service )

Ditto, I would have immediately asked to speak to a manager. That is unacceptable behavior.

The problem with the multiple recommendations you're received here to take your original $5 back is that now you've completely stiffed a valet who already considers $5 too little tip AND he's going to get in your sports car. That's really bad mojo if you ask me. If you're going to take your original tip offering back, you need to be prepared to have the ***** to insist that a different valet park your car, or park it yourself. I'm certainly not making a blanket statement about all valet's, but many of them are younger guys and wouldn't think twice about inflicting some form of damage that would be hard to spot until you're off the lot.

I'm a pretty nice guy, so I almost always give a tip when tradition demands you give one. This is one of the few situations where I might have taken my cash back. You gave him enough money that he could eat at Taco Bell for 2+ meals (mmmm, 99 cent burritos). At the most, you should have let him keep the first 5 and walked away. It's a gratuity, so to hell with him if he's going to spit on your handout. No one is absolutely entitled to a tip in the US. If they were, it'd be included in the price and that job market would be a lot more competitive.

I might, just maybe, see a question if you handed him a nickel or something small like that. Nominal tips like that, where he hasn't screwed up and it's blatantly obvious you're disrespecting him, make you look like a punk and demeans the other person. Anything over a dollar, though, merits no complaint.

As far as the whole "Do you need change" subtopic goes, I think it's a legitimate efficiency question on the server's part. Why spend the time making change when you're just going to give it back to them anyway? The time could be better spent waiting on other patrons and improving the quality of the establishment, AKA sucking up to another customer for a bigger tip. Of course, I've never been waitstaff before, so maybe there are other factors that I'm unaware of.

kcobean: he was picking up the car when he tipped the 5, not dropping it off

Whenever I get approached for gas like that its pretty obviously for drugs and not gas. Every now and then I will give a buck or two to a disabled Vet with a sign that says he is lookin for work, but the gas station thing is BS.

In Omaha, they had a city festival where you paid cash for tickets to buy food. On my way out I had some leftover tickets, so when a guy walked up and asked us for money to buy a sandwich I tried to give him the tickets. The guy stared at me, said "I can't take that, I'm a bad guy, a bad guy" and walked away.

You should definitely call a manger. If one of my guys did that they'd be gone without a doubt. Your not even suppose to solicit a tip let alone ask for more once you got one.

This one time me and my buddies went to mcdonalds and some guy asked outside asked me for some money to buy some food so I told him on my way out. On my way out I handed him a big mac meal and he took it walked to the trash can and threw it away and told me I said Money *******. since then I ignore them all.

You should have said, "Well, now that I bought this car, I don`t have any money left."

you seem sad that you have him an extra 5 dollars. Why are you sad about it if you did it? No offense but thats really stupid! Why would you give him an extra 5 for being a jerk off?

Valets are uneducated morons....You have told him "Let me give you a REAL good tip...Check out monster.com and get a REAL job" ....Then....take back the FIRST $5 bill you gave him and flip him a quarter.

Agree, would of said "Hold on let me trade you that 5 for something else.... Then gotten $0.02 and been on my merry way.

I tip valets based on how long they take to get my car.
under 3 min $5
3-7 min $2-3
7-10 min $1-2
Over 10 $ "here is a tip, hurry up next time"

Wow, 5 whole posts and you're already insulting people...Nice. Did you realize that ZU L8R *is* a Valet (or manager of some sort)? Why don't you throw some other blatant stereotypes around too. Maybe you can get yourself banned as a racist before your 10th post!

Seriously though, there are valets out there who are cautious and hustle and are worth a $10 tip, but one that *expects* it is never worth it in my opinion. While I personally wouldn't turn my Z over to a Valet (just because you never know what you're going to get), but I wouldn't hesitate with the Navigator. Valet parking is a nice service.

I never understood why it is customary to tip when you get the car back. Most of the time it is too late. If I'm going to tip big, it will be when I leave the car. Then maybe a buck or two when I get it back. (a little off topic, I know)
