its all about the study of the human mind and what certain sounds, words, colors, shapes....... do to our processing. A huge amount of time and money goes into the study of the human brain.

Seems like car makers LOVE using "X" ...obviously becuz of the Sexual innuendos and stuff....Sort of like "Men, If you want to score tonite, drive to the club in a 400SX Sports Car...LOL

As far as the "Z" label.....It just says ZOOM or FAST.....NOW...When you add the Z and the X together....You get FAST AND SEXY!!!

If memory serves, the letter Z was first used internally at Chevy to designate the Z28 option package for the Camaro. It eventually became the public name for the high-performance Camaro, and the Z portion of Z28 has ever since been associated with go-fast cars.

So I don't believe there's anything inherently "sporty" or sexy about the letter Z... it's more an accident of history, tracing back to some Chevy engineer who arbitrarily used it to ID an options package. (OTOH, maybe there is something about Z-ness that prompted that engineer to use that letter, rather than A or B or C or...)

Wow, what a bunch of great responses. I really like the7ferret's and Brckyd's answers. I bet it really is a combination of what's been mentioned altogether though. It all obviously boils down to marketing and what people are more inclined to buy. But it's also cool to think that it does have some historical basis as well. Whatever the answer is...it seems to work very well with a whole lot of people.

In countries which speak the British version of English, the last letter of the alphabet, Z, is pronounced Zed.

Since that pronunciation has been around alot longer than the American version, Zee, the real question is why we don't pronounce it Zed. (Maybe we changed it just to spite the Brits, after the American revolution...?)

Seeing as the Z28 has been around since a few years before Datsun's Z or way before BMW's Z...

Zed, reminds me of pulp fiction and the gimp. The new Nissan G-ride for Gimp!, nah, would never sell.

"who's motorcycle is this?
"it's not a motorcycle, it's a chopper baby."
"who's chopper is it?"
"Zed"
"Who's Zed?"
"Zed is dead, baby, Zed is dead."

Perhaps we would all "SHED-yool" our trips to the "la-BORE-a-tory" at "Hospital" [w/o a "the" before it] if not for that same revolution. And of course, we might also have a Ministry of Silly Walks.

OTOH, I'm a real codger, b/c the younger guys were reminded of Pulp Fiction, while I was thinking of a Monty Python sketch from the 70s. *sigh*

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I've only seen a handful of those on the road and my jaw drops everytime I do. I think next time I use valet parking I might just tell the valet to bring out my 'Z' (strategically leaving out the 'Nissan' part of it) and hope, w/ fingers crossed, that he bring out one of THOSE. Yeah Right!
