The term goes back to when the main mode of transmission was horses (hence the term horse power). X number of horses were said to "pull" Y amount of weight.

To my understanding this term comes from pilots whom pulled back on the stick(LOL) to create G-forces called this pulled or pulling G's. This came to be common place when the people experienced the G-force felt with hard acceleration. Or they pulled "G's" in their car. This was then shortened to pull hard(LOL....bwahahahahahahaaha) and hence the term "pulled" became used incorrectly.

I read this on some internet site that mentions how each and every urban myth began(and man was I laughing with all the pulling inuendos)

Because in motorsports push is already taken and used as a reference to understeer.

"My car was pushing pretty badly on turn 9, but pulled well in the straights."
