Default G35 Sedan with 298 HP!!! WTH!!!

I noticed an ad in the latest car and driver for a 298 HP G35 SEDAN. I can accept that they throw the coupe drivers a few extra hp since they do tend to pay a feew bucks more for their cars, but find it hard to accept that they had to give the sedans more hp than most Z's.

What the HECK is Nissan thinking? Hopefully it means all Z's will be 300 hp for 2006.

i didnt think that the sedan came with 298 hp, i was under the impression that the sedan was bumped up to the 280 hp that coupe originally had and that only the coupe in manaul transmission came w/ 298 hp

xjerseyzfinestx i thought u were serious hehe

U might get 300 hp but u get less torque. Does it really make much difference? LIke if i went up against another 6mt 300 hp z, with equal drivers, who would win?

I think the HP bump is probably a marketing strategy, since the new AWD Acura RL has 300hp stock and finally jump out of that FWD circle. Well...we all know Zs weight less than Gs

i think the g with 298 hp will now be as fast as the stock 287 hp Z...the 300hp Track/35th will be faster than the G with the 298 hp

I don't think either the sedan or the new G35c will be faster than the 287 hp z. I also don't think the 300hp z will be faster than the 287 hp z. The lose of torque will even it out. Maybe one will be faster at first or at higher speeds but all in all, so close you wouldn't be able to tell. I agree with it being a marketing strategy.

hmm. the 300HP 350Z should be faster than the 287. The lost of PEAK torque might be true. But peak torque isnt the same as peak HP. Most important thing about torque is how much you have over the RPM line... Also its not only the 13HP the track/anv editions have they also redline at 7k rpm (400rpm higher or so)... but then i go online and look at the specs and i see something. It gained weight. the track model now weighs 3300lb according to nissan. used to weigh 3225 or so right? I would still guess the 300HP would be .2 seconds faster in 1/4 or so. better top end as well...

This is absolutely 100% correct. I was actually explained this not too long ago I believe on this board.

I, too, was under the impression that the loss of torque would balance out with the gain in HP and result in a car that was just as fast as the stock Z. But if that were the case, why would Nissan waste time and money producing that?

As it turns out, the bump in HP does decrease the peak torque, but increases the amount of usable torque throughout the powerband. And as much fun as peak numbers are, higher numbers under the curve makes the car faster.
