Default Upgrade Base Z rear to posi traction...

Do I have to go to the dealer or can my local mechanic handle this? I noticed the rear alone is about $1,000. Anyone install a posi traction rear in your base model Z? How much would something like this cost outside the dealer? Would saving money be worth it?

Many companies offer LSD's for the 350Z.

I'd say Kaaz was the first. I believe Nismo offers one, so your dealer should be able to install it.

around $900-1200 for the locker diff from Nismo, Cusco, or Kaaz. if you go with other than Nismo, you'll need a couple of parts to make it work from Nissan.

install should be around $200 or so unless you can do it yourself.

i had a Nismo 1.5 way purchased from my dealer when i bought the car and installed upon delivery of the vehicle. $850 installed tacked onto the price of my car... part was sold to me at cost.

kinda off the topic. I got an 04 touring and I've heard that it comes with lsd. Sometimes when I take off too rough, I notice that the rear right wheel is spinning more than the left. Is this normal?

That is one sensetive driver.... you can really tell which wheel rotates faster or you just think you can?

I drove a v6 mustang a while ago(no t-lok) so I know what it feels like. Also, the car starts to shift to the left when it does it

Now I see why no on else has ever come close to your install cost. You got it at that price to close the deal to buy the car. To bad for the rest of us we already own the car and dealers want to make money in their service departments. But to anyone that reads the FSM and see's what's involved, it's not a surprise.
The install is not a DIY unless you have the specialized tools required to check alignment or you don't care about the diff's lifespan. Lowest install cost I've ever seen was a estimate at a independent garage for $325, but the work was never done to know if it held up to reality.

Z1 Performance (Adam)
"Lots of us have Clutch type LSD's..install is not for the unexperienced. I had a drivetrain specialist install mine as there is specialized tools needed"

Edogg218
"I have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge and many specialized tools, but nothing like what is needed for this install."

"After reading through both the included instruction manual and the FSM, I would suggest that you have this installed by a transmission specialist. The tolerances are tight, and a small error in alignment could destroy the gears and require an entire new rear-end."

g356gear
"I got a stock viscous LSD from www.car-part.com for $300. You should eventually get a clutch type LSD like the KAAZ or NISMO because there is no way to get the power to the ground with the stock open diff. Look under CARRIER on car-part to find a used one."

lovetoclown
"The Nismo LSD is $850 and the install was around $400 I think. I had it done at Performance Nissan."

Jason@Performance
"well.. we charge about 480 for the install of the LSD... so its really up to you... have a tech who builds these up on a semi daily basis or (not insulting any ones tech's) someone who hasnt done one of these and just installing the pumpkin..."

The Nismo LSD come's with 100% of the required parts to convert a base Z. The other kits do not come with the LSD stub axle's, with will cost you a addition $300 unless you take a 20% discount that PerformanceNissanParts offers on oem parts.

yes. most viscous LSD's are still biased depending on the condition of the fluid.

this is why i went with a base and got the Nismo LSD instead of opting for the Enthusiast.

i was very disappointed with the performance of viscous LSD's when a friend of mine and i shared a WRX with stock viscous diffs for autocrossing. you could feel it wasnt fully locked up.

yes. all of the aftermarket LSD's are clutch pack. the stock is viscous. Quaife has yet to release a worm gear LSD for the 350Z.

Could anyone comment on the real world differences with the Nismo LSD compared to the stock open diff?

I have a Base and I am considering getting a Nismo LSD installed. I presume if at some point in the future I decided to add a supercharger, that the LSD will aid considerably in reducing wheelspin when accelerating? What other things would I notice are different during the course of normal driving with one installed?
