Default Brake Dust Fronts Wheels Only??

I have about 1,200 miles on my 2005 Z now and it is badly in need of a wash.

I noticed that the front wheels are virtually black with brake dust, but there is very little on the rear wheels. I figure the fronts are doing more work and might expect them to be a little dirtier, but this is a huge difference.

Does that sound normal?

Yes it is normal, the front brakes apply 80% of the whole braking power, and the rear are only good for 20%, so it is logical that the front gets dirty... iguess :P

Ditto. Same issue here, but Neo is right.. front brakes do all the work, and thus will have more break dust coating your wheels. Be sure to wash those things often!

1200 miles between washes???
If you sell your car let us all know. You don't read like one of "us". I can imagine what your car will look like in three years. We will pass on the caveat to others.

My front wheels get filthy too. It got so bad once I just jacked up the car, took em off, and gave em a good scrubbing. This blonde older lady in my neighborhood drives a black Z, and her front wheels get so dirty that I can't tell if she has different colored rims. But like everyone else said, that's natural, because the front brakes do most of the work (which is why they're bigger).

Most cars I have owned front wheels get dirty faster. I either wash the car or clean the wheels as soon as it get too dirty. If you don't clean the rims quick then it get much harder to clean them later on.

MJD, that's very nice of you to flame the newbie whom you know absolutely nothing about. For starters you made an A$$umption that I said the car has not been washed since I bought it. I made the statement about 1,200 miles so that people would know it was very new. I'm hoping the brake dust will subside [at least a little bit] after it has been broken in a bit.

FYI, I have my car detailed every three months, with a minimum of monthly washings. In central Florida that is not at all unreasonable.

OT: What are peoples opinions of the various brake dust removal spray on's? I hear that some of them can damage the clear coat wheel finish. Any comments or recommendations are welcome. My previous Prelude did not have nearly this bad of a problem with brake dust, so I never investigated them before.

Brake dust is also bad in Mercedes, but very few in my everyday commuter, 4runner. The Z rarely goes out of the garage, and my front wheels is always a little black and dusty. Washing brake dust is easy!!!

Yikes!

If you ever sell your car please let us know just in case your attitude rubbed off on the car. We will pass the caveat onto others.

you can always switch to better brakes. I believe the Hawk HPS pads don't leave as much dust.

Brembo's dust a lot in the rear too... It's a hassle cleaning them. Rain makes it worse.

Uuuuh, go for a reverse thrust setup like in a Mars lander. That ought to stop you pretty quick AND keep your rims clean. Just dont have JPL build it, itll crash.

Apply a wheel wax. The dust rinses off easily when you wash the car. I use the dust as a sign that it is time to hit the car wash. It doesn't bother me at all. My last car, a BMW convertible, was the same. Get used to it. Be careful of some of those "low dust" brakes on the market...some are not as good as regular dusty brakes.

My Z is almost three months old and the dust was so bad that I replaced the front pads with Akebono Ceramic Pads. NO DUST, well there may be some dust but it is the same color as the wheels so you can not see it. The brakes work great and no Dust. I have changed disk pads in many cars but this was the easiest change I have ever made.

Keep the brakedust off, it's terrible for your wheels! Next time you clean them just follow up with wax... it does'nt have to be anything special. Enjoy the ride!

Meguiar's Hot Wheels.

very safe wheel cleaner... spray on, scrub nooks and crannies, rinse with water. works on raw, painted, and clearcoated aluminum, all steels and chrome, and magnesium.
