Default question regarding paying taxs for a car

ok guys i have bought cars from a person and from a dealer and i totally forgot about this and cant remember...obviously when you buy a car from the dealer you pay taxs on it....do you pay taxs on a car when you buy it from a person? i coulda sworn that when my gf bought my car off of me last year she didnt pay any taxs....someone help me out with this....and basically what it comes down to is should i buy from a person cause would it be cheaper? thanks for any help

thats ****ing ridiculous to me....i just dont get how you can tax something more than once....so what if a car was really given to someone? would you have to pay taxs on that?

On a Gift I don't believe you will be taxed. But there is some guidelines on it so you'd have to check your local laws to see what applies. Last year I transfer the title of my mom's 94 accord to me and I told the DMV that it was a gift, which it was. I just put down the sale as gift. Now if this was a newer, say 2003 or something that might be another story.

Each state is different but in general, the seller in the title enters the purchase price. When you go to register the car, the DMV (or applicable state agency) will collect the tax on the purchase price. In VA, even if the car was purchased for $1.00, the state will collect tax on the car value.

i think im just gonna end up calling up the currency exchange and see what they say....it would be nice to buy a car from someone and not pay taxs or pay less in taxs than i would at a dealer...
