Why are people still ordering their cars?
There seems to be a few of them at the dealers. I would check there first before you order to see if they have one that you might like instead of waiting 2, 3, 4, or even 5 months.
great question, but I think it must depend on what model you want and where you are. alot of the cars on the lot are going for more than MSRP, but definitly not all.
a few are ordering because they dont have a need for the car untill spring anyway.

I think a lot of the dealers just put up the mark-up cost on their window to see if they can fish some suckers.
Most of those dealers, I believe, would gladly sell them for MSRP (or maybe even less if they have lots of them).

I'm sure it didn't start out that way, but with the downturn in the economy, loss of jobs etc.. many orders were cancelled leaving quite a few cars available right away.. I saw a dealer in Southern californis with over 20 cars in stock for imediate delivery.. A friend just bought a car last week and will pick it up on thursday.. dealer has 3 or 4 with no waiting.. If I would have know this would happen, I would have never placed my order back in Febuary.. But I'm glad I received the car the first week in September..

If a dealer has them on the lot, there might be some extra bargaining power just before year end. Sales managers might try to pump up last minute sales in order to increase their year end bonuses. That week between Xmas and NY has got to be a slow one.
I was told by one of the dealerships down here that they wouldn't be doing any custom orders but would be stocking a large amount of Zs on the lot. I would think that I would have to preorder to get exactly what i want.
Some people order so they can get exactly the package, color, and options they want.
Others are walking in and finding cars that the original buyer backed out on. They get what they want, too. Which is a 350Z right now!

I think if you would want a Touring model equiped Z it would only be a matter of searching to find one with the color you want. It seems from talking to my dealer and searching the nissanusa.com inventory list that most non-preorders are going to be touring models. The next package appears to be Performance, track, enthusiast then base from my small window of watching. If you'd want an enthusiast model it might be easiest to just order. Basically if you have your mind set on a color and model it might be best to order.
I just ordered mine last nite (CS Enthusiast no spoiler/no bags) WOO HOO!!!
The dealer had 5 Tourings of various colors on the lot and pushed VERY hard to get me into one, but it's too much $$ for me. We looked around at other dealers and there were no Enthusiasts close to what I wanted.
I don't mind waiting through winter to get it....Now I don't have to "learn" how to drive it while there's still tons of snow and ice.

I bought mine on Saturday at a dealership in southern CA. CS Touring 6 spd. w/o nav. The exact car I wanted. Most dealers around here are marking them up $6-8k, and they originally asked $39,8 for my car, but I told them I could get it cheaper online, so they came back with $35,8, which was only like $1800 above msrp, so I drove the car home that day. Couldn't be happier (of course I would rather have paid msrp, but I got a decent deal I think)

It seems easier to get an ordered one at or below MSRP, while the ones on the lot are more of a hassle. Some dealers in my area won't even budge on the markup for the ones in stock ...
I ordered mine now in hopes that some of the production problems might be ironed out by the time my car's produced (February-ish)! Maybe I'll get lucky and only get half of the "first-year production problems" that were in the earlier units!

ordered mine today..........super black performance with burnt orange leather......did not want till spring so set for April delivery.
MSRP guaranteed and options I want are worth the wait. It will make the winter shorter also.

The order goes in first week of Dec. and they said it should arrive around March...Are they padding the schedule a bit?....maybe but I don't think I would enjoy white-knuckle-driving it home the first day in a mid-Feb. blizzard.
