You can use either clay or rubbing compound. I don't know why, I just prefer clay. Do your whole car while your at it and spend the day feeling on your new, smooth finish.
just use nail polish remover. it wont hurt the paint if you just use it to remove the nail polish. Its what I used to get rid of the black on the Z side markers.
