You didn't actually attempt to light your door handle on fire, did you?

They are made from cast aluminum and then brushed to a satin finish (the outside ones) One way to find out for sure is to take a file and do a few strokes.

Aluminum, this should come as a "shock" to anyone who has opened their door on a dry day.

Oh yeah....two more reasons I think theyre aluminum is because they water spot SUPER easily, and they attract fingerprints like flies on ****.

It looks like the handle bezel mounts are aluminum and that the handle levers are plastic.

plastic is an insulator, not a conductor.

my Z door handle shocks me when I touch it. plastic does not do that.

I say they are aluminum.

They also clean up like aluminum and get fingerprints on them like they are aluminum. They get cold like aluminum.

They really seem to have all chracteristics of aluminum and none of plastic. How does anyone figure they are plastic?

Dunno man, I inspected them and they seemed like plastic to me. I had been of the opinion they were aluminum until I spent some time looking at them. The portion around the outside of the actual handle (like where the keyhole is) seemed metal, but not the outside of the handle itself. There was metal behind it for sure, if the entire thing was made of plastic it would snap off after a few uses... people may have been shocked by sticking their hand into the slot, there is metal in there for sure...

And no, I didn't light it on fire.

you can get static electricity shocks from all sorts of material...

touching a cat can shock you

touching a plastic light switch can shock you

touching a leather couch can shock you

etc

Yep.. they are plastic OK. The 'shocking' comes from the vacuum deposited metal coating that was applied over the plastic (kind of like the "chrome trim" that is really plastic with metal plating. Nothing wrong with plastic for these things...

You can really be shocked by plastic? I have touched the metal screws holding the faceplate to the wall and been shocked but don't recall that happening by touching the plastic. I know about cats, leather, etc. but plastic? really?

They are cast aluminum, which means they can be brittle like plastic, but aluminum is a non-ferrous metal, so no magnetic properties.
