Those guys could have caught a spot of oil, loose dirt, anti-freeze, etc. and easily lost it. The late mid-corner braking could have brought the tail around just by itself.

All in all -- take it to the track. Once you do that -- these sorts of runs lose their appeal.

I know of a guy that went over a cliff and burned to death doing this kind of stuff. It's very sad.

Sorry to climb the soapbox -- but someone needs to bring in a dose of reality.

stop preaching, noone is obviously going to listen to you..

people do these kind of runs all the time and if they wreck there car good for them, they deserve it

WOW, great road.

North Carolina is kinda far but it would be fun to drive it (at a responsible 30 or so) with a jug of moonshine in the back, just to fit in. lol

I don't know what you guys are talking about, the Z can do that on stock tires and suspension. 1 pointer, because I agree no one will listen about the safety nagging: learn to 3 pedal (rev match) so you don't shift lock when down shifting into a corner. I heard the tires screech unnecessarily a few times.

Hey guys,
Many of us in the region just got back from ZDayz 2005.....same road where this was filmed. The cardinal rule of driving the dragon is "no double-yellow violations". These guys pretty much obeyed the rule (except for the pass there at the beginning).

And yeah, while the driving we did there is definitely risky, 99% of the people who go up there know exactly what is going on, so they are very aware and cautious. The weekend consisted of a car show, detailing sessions, a BBQ, Poker tournament, etc. It was a great weekend, and driving the Dragon was only part of the fun.

The ability to properly Heel and Toe and rev-match is really important to drive the road efficiently, but it's not a must unless you're really pushing hard. Most of the turns were banked enough that they were pretty forgiving.

I really recommend this event next year for anyone who is within reasonable driving distance (we drove 9 hours and there were guys that drove a LOT farther than we did).

Peace.

I am not worried about the driver's of the Z -- I am worried about the bus load of nuns, widows, orphans and impoverished children that they will run into.

Seriously -- if you think about all the overactive mothers, greedy lawyers, and attention-seeking legislators out there, how many accidents involving sports cars and irresponsible drivers will it take before sports cars are legislated (unfairly) out of existence??

Just something to think about.

Regardless of the naysayers, I like it! quality video and post that let's us experience the Z to its full potential. I'm not a proponant of driving crazy and putting others in danger but I saw none of that here. To me, the car was driven the way it's supposed to be driven and I bet the drivers had smiles on their faces the whole time... Way to go guys...good job.

Actually, this is a big motorcycle hangout. Two fatalities on bikes up there this weekend alone. Lots of bikers killed on this road for YEARS.

However, it is a blast to drive. You just have to drive within your ability and not let you ego get in the way trying to follow drivers too much that are better than you are.

for anyone that was on the dragon, did you encounter any trucks attempting it? its so ridiculous watching a truck go through because they take up both lanes around turns, and cant make some turns. bad thing is.. once you enter the dragon... you cant get out until you get to the other side... there are no turn arounds for trucks.

One of the people who passed this weekend was an off-duty Tennessee motorcycle cop. He had been reprimanded in the past for wreckless behavior on a motorcycle. It's not that he wasn't a good driver, but he wasn't a safe driver. Big difference. You can be a not so good driver and have a good time, you just have to recognize your limits.

YES...On our way up on Friday we had to follow a Semi. He had a police escort most of the way and it was just plain SCARY watching that dude drive. He seemed to be a good driver because he had no problems at all, it's just that the requirements of a vehicle that long are the use of both lanes for long periods of time around blind corners. It's clearly NOT a road that is appropriate for a tractor-trailer.

Not sure if its the same guy, but an off duty Lexington (KY) officer passed away while in that area. Apparently (according to the local paper), a truck wandered into the opposing lane and hit him straight-on. Sorry to see incidents like that . . .

But you see ... you will never, ever get the Z to its full potential on the streets. Because of the two-lane road and two-way traffic, you are not able to properly setup and apex those turns and let the car track out (by definition it would require using both lanes).

You will only see the full potential of the Z at the track (and after a lot of seat time and instruction). Trust me on this -- hit the track, and they you won't even care about driving these sorts of runs at any appreciable speed because it just won't give you the same enjoyment as a track day.

he does have a good point about the whole track day thing.. of course ive never had my Z on the dragon.. but ive had my bike there... and yeah.. its fun... but scary sometimes... ive seen people go down there, and other places around the dragon because people arent riding/driving in control. my brother ended up goin down on his bike because people cant drive, didnt get too banged up thank god, but unless youre on the tracks, dont drive like an idiot. know your limits. especially on the dragon, route 129 has no mercy.. if you mess up in the wrong place... you drop off a cliff basically.

?? I didn't hear anything about any deaths during this weekends events (ZDayZ & Wakin the Dragon). Nothing on killboy.com or tailofthedragon.com; last year there were two deaths but none the year before that.
