Mr. Al
Not sure why you thought that was an apology. I was still enjoying winding you up and watching you spin around.
You may feel free to insert the phrase "I think" before each of my declarative sentences. I too think they are opinions. But language and culture suffers when every edge is removed for mass consumption.
Like when an automatic transmission is dropped into a sports car.

Although I agree with you, and greatly prefer a manual to an auto, you're an idiot.

Huh?! Whatever dude. Hmm... you started your comment with the word "SORRY". Your supposed apology was fine up until you got to the end.

HERE IS ME BEING A POSER:
"You must be a product of inbreeding. I saw in some TV movie that people in KY practice that. So, it must be true."

Do you see how stupid that previous statement was because I based it on ignorance? I don't know you and I don't know if it's true. It would have been better to ask you to tell us about yourself instead of initiating a personal attack based on something I know nothing about.

Do you understand why people are upset at you? It is not because you like driving a MT and dislike the AT. It is the way you express your dislike and ignorance as personal attacks.

I'm seriously considering purchasing a 2005 Touring model with the A/T and wonder if you could post your impressions (BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE ACTUALLY DRIVEN ONE!) of the new auto with rev matching downshift capability. Am I wrong to think this (almost) gives the driver the best of both worlds? Manual and somewhat sporty shifting when needed and full auto when there's no need to manually shift cogs. /B

The only true sports cars owners have cars painted red and imported from Europe. Everyone else is driving a "wanna be". What a tool...

Actually, a true sports car would not have AC/power windows/a roof/a passanger seat... I could go on and on about why everyone that drives a Z/S2K/Vette/911/Ferrari is a poser.

I've driven the MY05 AT and I'm on the fence regarding the rev matching. In manual mode it does smooth out your downshifts but I haven't noticed any performance gains. In auto mode, the tranny will automatically synchronize your shifts. The 5AT is a torque converter based sequential shifter so it really isn't necessary to rev match because the torque converter can unlock or uncouple to allow the tranny to slip. Rev matching will make a smoother shift though. Unless you have some outstanding reason not to get an MT you should also test drive the MT and then decide if you want an MT or AT. The Z's 5AT is comparable to some of the ATs on the exotics. I like the AT in the Z because it was the first AT I've driven that has comparable performance to the MT. Drive both and just pick which you like better.

Thanks Aggro Al. I'm 5'5 and like to drive with my arms extended. Not much hope in being able to operate the Z's clutch and and meet this criteria! I tested both manual and auto last year and the downshift on the 2004 auto seemed vague and sluggish with the rear wheels dragging the engine revs up. I'm hoping that will have changed with the computer doing a throttle 'blip' as it changes down. I haven't yet driven a 2005 with this new feature as they are in such short supply here...hope to soon though. My order goes in Nissan's system this Saturday...I can always cancel if the test drive bums me out./B
p.s. I started a new thread on this particular topic as I wondered if anyone would see my post buried here on page 4 of the autobox vs "real men drive manuals" debate.

Check it for yourself.
The manual touring coupe is more expensive than the 5AT

I haven't looked up the options yet, but I suspect the 6MT with VDC and 5AT with TCS makes the difference? I can be wrong and majority of Tourings are sold as AT and it cost Nissan a bundle to get a 6MT fitted.

Have your friend upgrade his valve body and that will firm up his shifts. Also, he might want to raise the stall speed on the torque converter. That will allow the TC to instaneously flash to an RPM closer to the Z's peak power and at the same time get higher torque multiplication values.
Aggro_Al,

Thanks for the tip...I'll pass it along.

Hmmmm I didn't know there was something going on tonight, I guess I should pay attention to boards more often.

Actually, my new job is in Burbank. I'm no longer a west side peep.

6 speed requires much more concentration....and is a blast to drive. I just cannot see an auto for a Z, but whatever....different strokes for different folks, Eye suppose

I just bought a Touring AT last month. I got the AT because I use it for a daily driver and I have a 1/2 hour commute through light traffic. Also, I was using a Cadilac Seville as my last car and kinda got used to being lazy. Going from a Seville to a Z was quit a cuture shock.

BUT.... now that I'm in more of a sports car frame of mind I have to wonder if I should have got the MT. The way the AT shifts sometimes is a little annoying and the manual mode really doesn't subsitute for the real thing like I thought it would.

What we really need is a MT that has an automatic mode rather than an automatic with a manual mode.

Either way you wil like it.

Every type of tranny has it's pros and cons. Until they can come out with a tranny that can see into the future and always be in the perfect gear ratio 100% of the time there will always be some type of drawback. You might want to try the SMG or the DSG trannies. The SMG is an automatic that uses the same gearbox as the MT and the DSG has dual gear spindles. What sort of problems are you having with the Z? Maybe it's something that can be minimized or fixed.

My last car was a 5-speed, and I thought I would only stick with the manuals, but...

last year I ran across a super deal on a '03 Touring AT with 14K miles, so I bought it. I miss my manual, but I love the AT in traffic, which I drive in everyday. When not in traffric, I spend most of my time driving with it in manual mode. It takes a little getting used to, but I have as much fun cruising curvey back roads as i did in my old 5-speed..

The only downfall to the AT is when you accelerate too hard at slower speeds (30-40mph) it tends to downshift too far and rev the engine like you punched it until it finds the next gear. This can turn heads and make it seem as if you are a wreakless, crazy driver...
