Default Track Model Wheels - What Color?

I have a '03 DB Track with stock Ray's 18" forged wheels. I like the wheel design but hate the color. It looks like they are painted with a clearcoat. I can chrome them or strip and repaint/clearcoat them.

Will chrome add more weight? Any suggestions on paint colors?

Thanks in advance for your input.

I was told that the stock Rays are painted Spark Silver. I have a set, and like them, and I also bought my Volk GT-Vs in the same color. You can do whatever you want to them. Chrome will add weight, but I don't know exactly how much. If you like that look, another option is having them polished. I've seen pics of polished track rims and they look awesome! You might do a search or two and see if you can find pics. My buddy has a DB Z and he painted his rims black with some sort of a spray. It is very popular around here, and they look awesome! It makes his car look totally different. He wants to get my track rims so he can do those in black for his car, but I don't want to sell them. If you're interested, PM me and I can find out what the spray paint is called, and I can even get you some pics of his.

PS I think gold would look good! That's what I'd do.

I'd think the track wheels would look great in a bronze or gunmetal color.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've seen a DB with a gunmetal finished wheel and it looked great. Polishing is another option I hadn't considered. It means more maintenance but I bet it looks great. hmmmm...Polished lip, gun metal painted centers and spokes???

Yeah, somebody's done them with a polished lip too, and they look sweet. BTW, where are you in Oregon?

I'd sure like to see a pic of that combo. I can visualize it and it seems to me it would be a sweet look.

I live in the Portland Metro area, microsteve40. Ever get out here? I go "z"ippin' by Boise on my way to Idaho Falls once or twice a summer.

Hey Maddog, I did the search for you, and here's the thread with the track rims with polished lip. They are still silver, but I think they'd look BAD A** black/gunmetal/gold with the polished lip.

It seems like I make it out to Portland about once a year, for one thing or another. If you come through Boise this summer, shoot me a pm or give me a call. I'll buy you lunch and we can compare Z's!

PS What do you go to IF for?

Thanks for finding the thread, microsteve40. My thought is that the center section will be darker than the pics shown there. Probably gunmetal or even darker.

I go to IF to see my kids and grandkids. I belong to the Old FartZ club!!! LOLOL I'll PM ya before my next trip. Sometimes I drive straight through, sometimes I layover in Boise before going on. My two sons, 22 & 24, are jealous of my car. hehehe...

Come on and tag along, Lerxst. This isn't an original idea...there are a lot of wheel styles that mimic this particular approach. GM used to do this, mostly on the Pontiac line, back in the 80's. Their wheel styles sucked but the look wasn't bad. I just hadn't seen it done on a set of Ray's before but figured it would work. I'll keep posting here as I gather more info on the process (powdercoat vs. paint & how to seal the polished lip) and what the costs are.

You can get them polished for a few bills. I've seen it a few places and it looks nice. I think the stock silver color looks best on a redline, but that's just me. Any darker color like gunmetal or black only looks good with a polished lip.

taurran,

yer right. I've seen a redline track and the wheels look good as-is on that color. A darker center would look good on the daytona blue. I've seen one other db car with aftermarket wheels with a dark gray center and polished lip. I didn't care for the wheel design but the color and contrast looked good.

Thanks for the input.

I would polish the entire wheel but then again, they are your wheels...

Nice idea, Jeff, as I was considering chrome for a brighter look against the DB color. There's no way to clearcoat a polished wheel without discoloring, is there? But, a complete polished wheel appeals to me...except for the maintenance. <G>

Thanks for the input and I love the magazine you work for!!!

I'd have to say if you're going with some kind of color change, go polished. My second choice on a DB would be a flat gold powdercoat. You'd have to be pretty brave to do that though. Some might say it's Subaru-ish, but I've seen some really nice looking DB's with gold aftermarket rims.

I dont see why you could not get them clear coated if you like after polishing them. After all, they are aluminum so why would it be any different than any other wheel that has a clear coat. Companies like HRE repair their customer's wheels all the time and reapply clear coat. I would check into some places that do those type of things. You might be able to get exactly what you want thus a win - win situation.

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I will go full polished and clearcoat the wheels to preserve the finish. I'll start researching local shops who can do this and if I find some leads, I'll post results at the North West section of this forum.

Thanks again!
