my z vs a tire carcass
Many big rigs use recaps which are "vulcanized" onto an existing, worn tire carcass. Obviously they come off over time and end up on the freeways. I hate to see that damage to your car; it makes me angry. We have the same problem on I-10 in AZ. 2 years ago I went over one in my wife's '97 Mustang GT. Cost us $500+ in repairs. So far I've been able to avoid them, principally because I now stay WAAAAY BAAACK from the guy ahead of me, thus giving me a longer line of vision on the road and more time to react to debris.

I love it... "Road Alligators" is a great name for these beasts.
I distinguish between wildlife and this, however...
The "state" takes as much care to control the elements, such as wildlife, by giving you ample warnings in form of signs, as well as setting up underground crossings for animals whenever possible. Bottom line here, is that wildlife cannot be fully controlled from entering roads.
When it comes to big rig tires, it is only us to blame. This debree is on the road because of a process which is harmful to safety and yet unchanged. I'm very surprised this kind of thing is allowed. In this country of liability, those who provide big rigs with rethreaded tires should be sued for whenever their tire pieces cause harm to others.

Retreads are a part of life. Unfortunately we pay for it. Either we are going to pay for higher freight charges or we are going to eat the retreads.
Consider yourself lucky. I was on the right side and 40 to 50 feet in back of a big rig (he's in the lane left of me). He runs over a 4'x4' piece of 1/2" ply. It shoots from under his tires, crosses over to my lane, and bounces of my windshield and right side mirror (in my Prelude). I had no time to react and luckily it bounced off. I easily could've gotten decapitated.
I now either get way ahead or way behind tractor trailers.
I'm glad you made it out OK. Hey it's just bumper damage and can be repaired easily, you can't be fixed up that easily.

Tough decision *lots of sarcasm* haha, ok enough sarcasm... anyways there's no excuse for putting millions of drivers in danger with these dangerous road debris. Sometimes people have to swerve to avoid hitting them and could easily cause accidents with other vehicles or hit pedestrians.. or just as easily kill themselves. There should be legislation passed on a national level outlawing them. Of course it'll take a lawmaker actually getting into an accident from one of these to actually happen. Oh well... we can hope.
Alot of this is in Houston, You know we could call Akin's Army on Channel 2 (NBC). We could report this to them, and they'll make a big deal out of it and do a report.
