2 weekends ago. I was going 80mph on the hwy. It was freezing weather. Good thing this happened going uphill. I hit some blackice and I knew it because I just remembered that there was ice melting previously during the day since it was 45 degrees. That night it was 30 degrees. I could expect some of that melted ice to be ice by now. I kept it straight but a small little shift of the steering had me going right when I wanted to go straight. Good thing I hit some pavement right away too. If not, well I probably wouldn't be writing this. Winter and Z are not a good combo. Get some snow tires. I know its a pain in the a$$ to cough up a grand for them but its worth it in the long run. If you can avoid it with your mom's car, that would be good. If not get the tires.

i suggest calling *OFF*

My friend and i both own Z's. I fornuatly have a winter car. The other day I was driving to work in the beater and I passed him in his Z. You should have seen the look on his face, an inch and snow and he was pale as a ghost. I swear I could see the indents on the steering wheel from holding it so tightly. My suggestion, get a bus pass!
First of all, don't eventhink about driving the Z in the winter without snow tires. Like any other performance car with summer only tires the Z is absolutely worthless in the snow with these tires. After all there is a reason they are summer only tires. If you don't understand the difference go to www.tirerack.com and learn. As long as you get a good set of winter tires and take it easy you will make it through winter without problem. I've seen a lot of people talking about how bad the car is in the winter and how it doesn't go anywhere and they get stuck in the middle of the street only to find out that they are driving on performance summer only tires. You have to be smart, these type of tires on a four-wheel drive suv would give you the same issue. I used to own an Audi TT Quattro for a few years and decided to experiment early one year with summer only tires. I found out the darn car would not even accelerate in a .5" of snow on a flat street with all four wheels spinning. I have been driving my Z for 2 years now in MN winters with SNOW TIRES and have not had any problems. Although it is not the greatest in snow the facts is that my car does handle some what better in the snow than my wife's front wheel drive car with Goodyear all-season performance tires. You still have to keep in mind that the Z is still a sports car and it does have a lot of power so if we are out gunning it around corners and driving like an idiot in the middle of winter you will have problems. My suggestion is get some snow tires and drive safe or park the Z in the winter and get a Subaru.

My winter beater/daily driver is an AWD Impreza. I also experimented with full summer tires (225/45r17 Pirellis) in the snow and it was terrible. The 4 wheels would just spin when I tried to take off slowly in second gear. Worst, the engine would stall when I touched the brakes and would not restart when I’d ease off the pedal for lack of friction between tires and ground!
I’m very tempted to mount good winter tires on the Z, just to try it in the snow. It would be good drift training for next summer!

That was back in 2003 and 2004 when I was in Italy. I had upgraded to a STi-Prodrive suspension with 4 pot OEM brakes that didn’t fit the American spec 16in rims so I ran Euro spec OEM 17in rims. Plus an other set of 16in with insane offset that did cleared the calipers, for the track.
Now she’s back with the original suspension, brakes and wheels… (real long story that one…)

i dnt understand the new sti, it looks so wierd. Granted in the winter i see mostly the back of them LMAO But when parked,i get to see the front of them and they look like they were designed by the cone heads .
