Default Down shift to First gear grind?

Anyone else have this? The car shifts very smoothly through the gears, but when I'm comming to a stop from a roll, and try to shift into first, there is some resistence, and some very light noise (hard to hear unless windows are down and music is off).

Ideas? Should I have the dealership look at it?

My car has ~3800 miles on it btw

As far as I know, your really not supposed to shift back into 1st. 1st should only be used for take-offs

Does anybody else think like this? I noticed minimum speed for 2nd gear is 7mph at lowest idle w/o stalling.. and slowest speed for 1st gear is 4mph at min idle without stalling. But in all the stop and go traffic I notice the same resistance to down shifting back to 1st as the main poster says he has even with the clutch pegged to the floor to shift it. I've never driven another manual car but the Z ... Is that normal for every manual or just the 350Z?

On a total sidenote I saw a clk350 benz the other day, damn... hot car perfect numbers too.

only shift into first when you are completely stopped.

Happens to me when I shift into 1st too soon.

use 2nd gear at stop signs and stuff. Not like we stop all the way anyways.

There is a lock out to prevent accidental shifting into first if going above a certain speed. You almost have to be a t a complete stop to get it into 1st. NEVER FORCE IT INTO 1ST WHILE MOVING

It is, but we have some uncommon owners who just got their first manual transmission.

First gear should not be shifted while in motion, the reason why it doesnt want to shift smoothly is because the synchro is working really hard to match the rpms. This will destroy your 1st synchro. If you really have to shift to first at slow speeds then double clutch at idle engine speed and gently shift to 1st, dont push too hard. I am not sure if that is good either, but better than shifting too hard and getting the synchros worn out.

MY friends first manual car is a Mustang GT and he screwed the 1st gear synchro and had to get the synchro assembly replaced, of course within warranty.

Never shift into First Gear unless you're stopped.

You should be able to take off in 2nd gear from a dead stop anyway.

+1, don't shift into first unless you are at a complete stop.

you can shift into 1st as long as you are going slow enough for it to go in smoothly, if you have to force it in, it will make noise or grind.

I have resistance into every gear, so I am sorry, but I do not know what "smooth" is . I cannot put the car into first unless I'm less than 10mph. I can try and push it and, with some effort, get it into 1st at 15. Anything above that is a tuff one.

Yeah, just stay in second and when it gets low in RPM's clutch in and coast to a stop. Then put it in first. No grind that way.

You people need to learn how your tranny's work-no $hit it wont go into 1st if you just push it in. Blip the gas and rev the motor so you just slide right in(rev match in) it will go smooth as butter...
