The car is pretty much fully gutted with the exception of the dash. Checkout my cardomain page for the mods The Z used to be my daily driver until I got my first ticket in it. It seems to be away from home a lot since my sponsors work on getting it exposure or it is being worked on in one way or another

+1 learn to double-clutch on the downshift.

But if you're throwing it into 1st for stop and go (i.e. sequential stop signs) then just come to a complete stop. Never jam the shifter into a gear... if you are shifting correctly you barely need any force at all.

Ideas? Should I have the dealership look at it?

My car has ~3800 miles on it btw
As other have said, if it does not want to go into first you are going too fast to downshift, the synchro is working too hard. This is normal. Just wait for your speed to slow down or go in second. I agree that if you really need to downshift into any gear that is resisting you need to learn how to blip the throttle and downshift. For instance, if you are coming into your favorite sweeper and you know what gear you want, you need to know how to put in the clutch, blip -- rev match, downshift, release the clutch and power out of the curve. If you do this all of the time it becomes second nature.

As for gear grind. I am not sure that what posters here are calling gear grind is truly gear grind. The Z transmission does "clink" especially from first to second. You NEVER want to hear the sound of gear grind. It is loud and horrible.
