i asked this question before but i got very little answers. since people have said i can't check the fluid or fluid levels because it's bolted down and only a dealer can check it. some have even suggested that i don't need to change the fluid and that it should last the life of the car (which doesn't sound right at all).
i've tried doing a search but came up with very litle on the subject. it costs over $200 to do an auto tranny fluid change at the dealership...

I was wondering about the auto tranny fluid change too. I asked the dealer when its suppose to be changed. Since I have over 26k miles. They told me not to worry about it. I think at 60k miles I will do a change.
On the 5AT, the tranny fluid is Fill-for-Life. Under most conditions you will not have to replace the fluid. The tranny is sealed and should be serviced only by someone who is certified in this particular tranny because they use proprietory Nissan fluids and parts. If you have an early Z you may notice that the tranny dipstick is bolted in place.
Check your driver's manual.

At 20K I had Nissan drain and replace the fluid in my AT. This would leave many quarts in the tranny. When they replaced what was drained they overfilled my tranny by several quarts. They told me 3, however they drained 3 quarts after about 2.5 weeks of dripping fairly quickly. I then complained to the service manager because I paid for fluid by the quart and I ended up getting a free Amsoil Syn Oil change. If they drain and fill I think they should be adding around 5-6 quarts of fluid at the most...

I could not find in the Service and Maintenance Guide that says it is filled for life, but there is something interesting about the change intervals. If you go by the "premium" service, it is scheduled to be changed every 30K miles. Otherwise, by schedules 1 and 2, they simply inspect the levels every 15K. Personally, I will be changing it each and every 30K miles, but no, I do not agree with everything the "premium" service allegedly does. I asked the service manager about it, and even he didn't recommend it.
