Thanks for the comments, my step-parent's family are all from New Orleans. Most of them are safe but some are yet to be heard from. Even though some were able to leave, and even if you did wanted to, my understanding is that you can't. Some ppl were caught in the hurrican while in their cars stuck on the highway!

You guys gotta realize there are an overwhelmingly large number of poor people in NO.

With that in mind--- many dont have a proper education, and when things like this occur, their minds do not comprehend the fact that disaster aftermath such as flooding can occur. As for the looting... can we honestly blame these people? I mean they're living years of their lives waiting for their meager checks due to being on welfare... so they jump at an opportunity to collect stuff for themselves and their familes. We can't say that the lives lost were "justified" --- a life lost is a life lost and we need to acknowledge the importance of precedence for that over a silly piece of sheet metal you see above.

Are you serious??? "waiting for their meager checks due to being on welfare". This justifies looting?? They need to get a job and get off welfare because I'm sick of supporting their a**es!

+1 Stevem. We work our butts off day in and day out to support a huge number of these people. Not to say that I would ever wish to switch places, but in many cases the system is being taken advantage of.

This post wasn't meant to start a huge debate, just saw the pic and it related directly to the Z community. It's amazing the loss of life and property. We all love our cars and our lives here.... it's hitting on every front.

I think the government is responsible for allowing.facilitating a city to be built below sea level. you can't breathe below sea level. It makes no sense. I also think Florida and california should be considered un-inhabitable. Anyone who decided to live there in the first place is taking a risk that a natural disaster could take everything the have. don't buy a house close to a river or at the bottom of a hill. Water kills.

What area is not prone to natural disaster? I mean....Fires, Blizzards, Tornados, Earthquakes, Floods........Shoot there may be no where to live if we find all these places "un-inhabitable"

ok, so live there, but if you are going to live there you should be prepared to evacuate, if you are too poor to evacuate when there is something happening, you should have been in a safer place to begin with. Looks like survival of the fttest if you ask me.

LOL, business wise, you can't believe how much paperwork/red tape I have to process compared to Ontario. Incredibly nosey government. Still, geographically it's a beautiful province. The culture, minus some of the extreme political views, is also very nice.

As poor as some of these people are in NO, I find it hard to believe that they couldn't afford a city bus ticket to the Super Dome when the warning was issued. Frankly, I'm sure they could have even walked to shelter.

Had everyone evacuated or gone to an approved shelter the rescue effort could have been immediately focused on those within the shelters.

Perhaps manditory evacuation should be law like a curfew. Those not obeying the order will be arrested and receive a lower priority assistance after those who did as told. Also, every city should have a P/U service connected to 911 so that the elderly who can't get out are serviced.

Dobbers...I'm both with you and against you. First of all, I live in Florida, only partially by choice. I chose my training pipeline in the military and it happens to be in Florida. That's where I'm against you. I'm with you, though, in that if you choose to live there, you should be able to get out. Myself, I'm quite capable and have evac'd once or twice.

New Orleans is starting to remind me of Mogadishu, and I hate it. I was there a couple weeks ago for a triathlon and it seemed pretty sketchy then. I can only imagine what it's really like right now.

Yes, that's the issue FEMA is getting its butt chewed off for. They are supposed to be capable of mobilizing at a moment's notice, that's their JOB. Yet, even after promising 1000 buses to get people out two days AFTER the hurricane, very few arrived.

I am not trying to start a political war on these forums, but had this happened somewhere else in the world, all of us would be saying that the "commander in chief" should be held accountable. Its sad how this has turned into a photo op for the higher-ups. Too little waaaaay too late.
