Default Test drive question

When you guys took your cars for a test drive, did the salesperson come along with you? I had a friend with me and they told me that they need to drive the car off the lot due to insurance reasons (then I could take over). Is this legit?? I've never had this happen before. I had a Pontiac dealer let me drive a GTO alone without any questions, just told me not to get a ticket I just feel more confortable with a friend/parent in the car with me instead of a salesperson. Anyone else have this happen?

Every time I've test driven a car, the salesman had to drive it off the lot, or at the very least, they would drive it to the driveway and we switched there...

If your interested in driving the car, I'd like to make sure that you return it. Yes I’ll ask for identification and proof of insurance. Also if asked “Are you prepared to buy today?” say yes. I don't want to waste my time on someone who is “just looking.” I cant make mortgage payments with “just looking.”

anything that happens on the lot, the company is responsible for, any that happens outside of the lot, you are responsible for....and plus, they don't want you to take a high performance quality car out that actually has value (compared to the GTO), and go out and rag it out....how would you like it if you bought your car, and a week later found out that someone took that car out on a test drive and beat the sh*t outta it?...when the Z first came out, you weren't allowed to drive it unless if your financing is approved and you're ready to sign and buy it...

most import dealerships value their property, therefore they won't let you take it out alone....maybe, MAYBE...if you're an old person, but other than that, they wouldn't let you take it out alone...another reason is "control"....they salesman wants to take control....either that or he can refuse the test drive

What do you do on your test drives? shift under 3000 rpms? I'm not saying that I beat up the cars I drive, but you want to put a car through its paces before you buy it. And most cars that you test drive have less than 100 miles on them, which is within the breakin period. This is why I will not buy a car with many miles on it.

The only real reason why I am asking is because I havent had to do this at other dealerships (GM, Mazda, or Acura). I didnt know if it was the BS the dealer was giving me. He also told me that the silverstone paint cost $1000 extra So far, I havent been very impressed with the quality of service that I have received. And I did tell them that I was planning on purchasing a car within the next month, and I was just waiting on seeing what kind of price I could find. AND, the dealer never called back to follow up.

I've heard Silverstone goes for an extra $1,500 or so, not worth it IMO but that's what a buddy told me....that's a new exhaust system! Anyway, when I went to test drive my car the guy rode with me and I drove it off the lot, he just pulled it out for me into the middle of the lot because it was behind another car and I asked him to cuz I didn't want to be the one to hit anything in THEIR lot. We got to talking during the test drive and he said he had a Vette at home and BS'in about how fast it was. I thought he was bein' cool so I asked him if I could push the Z to see what it had and he said no prob. I then proceeded to redline that car around every turn and blasted it pretty hard, the salesman was grabbin the door handle on the passenger side to stay in the car! It kinda looked like that new Z commercial with the redneck music to tell ya the truth. Haha...Anyway, when we got back I told him I'd take one. (They had a Redline that I drove, but I got them to trade one for a SB which is the color I wanted, three days later I drove it home)
