Default Nissan Service Department Says To Use-->

Only a nissan oil filter. I went to set up a time to get my car serviced. Due to a tap on a cold start up. Sounds like valvetrain noise. Like a lifter tapping for a second or so. The service writer asks what type of oil filter I use. Told him Mobil one filter and oil. Hey says only use a nissan filter due to that fact that it has a check valve in it that keeps the oil up. I guess he ment to keep the oil pressure up during start up so that the Valvetrain gets oil in a decent amount of time. My car is an 03 with 8700 miles on it. The oil is changed at the right intervals. I see no reason why I would have any noise what so ever. Does anyone have any insight on this little ordeal?

All help and comments are welcome.

Thanks
George

Check this thread about half way down:

mwaller mentions startup noise with Mobil 1 filters and suspects the anti-drainback valve not functioning properly. Maybe this is what the service person was referring to?

I use the stock oil filter because I work at a Nissan dealership, and yes I have start up rattle also. That pretty much throws the excuse of the oil filter right out the window. By the way how many other people are getting a start up rattle, and is there any damage happening there?

Question

I'm using the K & N oil filter and I have this problem also. I've got well over 24K miles and have been using K & N filter since my 1st oil change at 1200 mi. With all the other prblems that I had with the car I didn't really notice this until recently.

Thats cuz u work at Nissan and get the filters free or damn near free....For the rest of us, we'd rather save $ and NOT get screwed on price by the Nissan dealer

Here's an analogy for ya: I used to work for J&J and was able to buy Tylenol for about .50 for a big *** bottle....I don't work there anymore...you think I pay FULL price for that crap now??

HELL NO!

Hey was350, Thanks for the link. The car gets looked at this monday. Its about time for an oil change anyway. we shall see if they change the oil and filter. From reading it seems that alot of people have the start up rattle. Maybe there is an other issue besides just the filter.

Thanks for the info.
