Question Surfboard Rack on a Z?

Does anyone use a surfboard rack on their Z? If so, what kind and size of board?

Someone at the surfshop said the roof was too curved and the board would wobble. I have a 7'10 funboard and had a bad experience stuffing it in the hatch.

No but I would be curious as to what that looks like as I'm getting into surfing myself. I suppose I could stick it through my sunroof lol.

I suggest you try a softrack. Easy to take on/off, adjustable, and does not scratch your paint.

Too bad you dont have a shorter board. I can usually stick my 6-7 in about any cars front seat when it is reclined. I have not tried it on my Z because I live right at the beach, thus just walk to the water.

Zland,

If I was surfing Cali waves, I would have a shorter board too.

I keep a 9'5 longboard at my family's beach house in Destin FL. The waves in the gulf may be small, but they are consistant breaks.

Nooooo, don't put a rack on your car. I've had bad experiences with surf racks on my car. When I have my Montero Sport I couldn't fit my 7'2 inside so I put it on the roof with a soft rack 'n it scratched the paint on the top of the back door. I was pissed. I wouldn't risk scratching the paint on the Z. The roof is kinda weird 'n unstable to put a rack w/ a board on it. I miss surfing, ever since I got the Z i haven't brought myself to take her to the beach hahah. Plus, my friend has my short board.

I think you could install permanant racks on a Z, but then why would you? I would imagine you could fit a short board up to maybe 6' or 6'2 max inside the Z. anything longer and you'd probably be forced to put it on/in another vehicle b/c if you did install racks and put a long board up there you would probably crease the board or even break it in half due to the racks being too close together and the wind being too strong at driving speeds. you could probably use soft racks as well, but you'd get the same result. if you install permanent racks you'll have to drill into your Z, if you use soft racks you'll end up with paint chips on the door well where you clamp the metal part of the rack. I'd say to just buy a beater surf car.

I do not want to install a permanent rack but the soft, temporary kind. I was just wondering if anyone might have tried this or is our roof too curved. I do not want my board to wobble and damage the paint.

Honestly, your best choice is to hitch a ride with one of your surf buddy's or buy an inexpensive used car as a daily driver/beach mobile. A surf rack would be unstable on the Z 'n if the slightest thing goes wrong, you're gonna have a nice dent and scratches on your baby. I personally wouldn't risk it. Pick up a Civic hatchback for $1500 or something. That's what I'm planning on doing later down the line.

Thanks a bunch. I neglected to think "if the slightest thing goes wrong." I don't know about down there in the pines, but here in Palm Beach County, the roads are construction crazy!

I would buy a beater to use for surfing. Not only will the racks imo scratch the paint but the salt water will drip on it and your interior will get screwed with soaked wetsuits and sand etc. I tried fitting my 5' 10'' round nose fish in my z and it just wasn't happening. Btw if u do put racks on the z make sure u put the skeg(s) forward and not be a tool that drives around with the board on backwards. hah that annoyes me so much.
