Look at what the 911 owners say about the Z.....
I think the rennlist members were rather polite in their posts about the Z. When the Z first came out I really did not like the door handles. Now that I own a Z I like the handles and how they fit into the car's design theme. I would love to own a Porche, I imagine that many people would, but for the money you would be hard pressed to beat the performance, quality and good looks of the Z.

+1 on that. I used to have an '86 Carrera and be apart of that crowd. I'm sure the average age is a little higher.

The Rennlist (formerly porschefans.com before being busted by Porsche NA) was my first experience to an Internet forum back in 1995. I found it to be a very mature, professional crowd mainly centered around engineering types. Of course the average age is greater than that of this forum due to the price of the cars.
Its really just two different worlds. How many aftermarket accessories of any type to you generally find on a Porsche? The Z still falls into the Tuner category like the Civics and such. Not saying that's bad, just a different class of car.
I rather enjoy seeing a Boxster knowing full well I can leave his car in my rear view mirror. The same with a Boxster S (except the 06) because its going to come down to the driver.
Btw, anyone ever see the black 350Z on the forgedinternals.com web site? Exactly how I'd build my Z - unassuming. Unfortunately I'm selling my Z to buy a damn truck due to a big project I'm undertaking.
Oh yeah. Who really cares what a 911 owner thinks. They used to stick their noses up at 944 owners even when the 944 Turbo S would take the majority of 911's. Besides mature and professional, add snobby to that list. LOL

You know, we (big bad 911 owners) are probably viewed to be just as snobby to you as you are to the "Tuned Saturn/J body" crowd. And we (stuck up pretentious 911 owner) often complain about how snobby the Ferrari guys can be.
I used to own a pair of 350Z's so I can say what I want.
There are as many silly statements made in this thread as were made in the post on Rennlist. Most, if not all, 993 owners would not take a newer 996 if offered an even trade for our 993's. Whoever made the comment about '97 and older cars being some sort of middle-class fashion statement is so far off base I won't spend any more time talking about it. I tend to think regardless of the year and model, the older a car gets they tend to fall into the hands of the people who truly deserve/admire them. I'd venture a guess that you'll find many more status seekers not wanting anything older than the current ($$$$) body style.
Another thing I'd really like to point out is the fact that these cars are not far off from one another in terms of price. I paid $34K for my '95 993 in very nice shape. 993’s can be had for the $30-40K range. So, let’s not exaggerate on prices.
Yeah, it was 7 years old when I bought it but so what.
993's are wonderful cars. They, as any other car, have their quirks but much of what you see on forums can really skew your perception of reliability. Most people don't post "Car is running fine" or "no problems here" type threads.
If you don't have endless pockets, a 993 is not a car you can just 'drive" and rely on a dealership to maintain it for you. I personally prefer it that way. The only time my car will ever see a dealership floor is when I need an alignment (special tools req'd). I cringe at the thought of letting someone else touch my car. It's my responsibility, and I like doing my own work. There is "VERY" little you cannot do at home with hand tools on these machines, if you are willing to take the time and learn.
350Z's are no slouch. Neither is a 993. I hate to hear it when people start comparing apples to oranges and make statements like, " Well, if I add a turbocharger, I could take it," etc.
Blunt speed is farther down on the list as to why many of us chose to own a 993/911/Porsche. I enjoy my car immensely, as I'm sure most of you enjoy yours. Unfortunately for me, both 350Z's I owned were riddled with problems and I eventually gave up.
Bottom line, we are all pretty damn lucky to own fairly expensive sports cars to begin with so let's leave it at that.
Cheers,
And if any of you ever find a person who paid $900 for an oil change, please let me know.

Demoman Im in complete agreement with you...BTW I didnt know you can get a 993 for that price...My god....Those are my favorite Porsches of all time...To me they are the last of the real 911's...Nothing against the current cars as they are fantastic sportscars...But the 993 has character in the lines..Its got a presense about it the 996 just dont have to me...I dont even like the overall shape of the 996...Only one I like is the 996 GT2...
BTW I heard about the trouble with the Z..Thats why I didnt buy one right away...I just got an 05 DB Touring and so far trouble free. But Ill keep my eyes on it and if it strarts to give problems Ill flip it for a used e46 M3 or maybe even a 993 now that they are affordable
...
I see yours is the non turbo. In straight line speed and handling how does the C2 compare to your previous Z's..What would a 96 993 TT or TT S
go for in todays market? Im certainly not expecting to hear in the 30k range..Probably 50k and up right?

wow wow wow, there Snake.
The TT's are in a completely different boat.
I've seen TT's for sale in the $63-65K recently (economy, perhap?) but most have an asking price in the neighborhood of low to mid $70K's.
A turbo S? "If" you could find one of the 181 that made it's way into the country, you'd still be shelling out about $100K+.
The NA cars are just fine for most of us.
To be completely fair, I would say the Z and NA 993 are pretty damn close in terms of performance. Stock to stock, both cars have similar stats.
The Z beats the 993 in terms of better transmisions.
The 993 is probably just a notch quicker, but a lot of that is driver dependent.
993 is not governed @156 mph. Top speed is about 170 (NA).
Style is completely subjective. Both are good looking cars. The Z is modern, chiseled, new.
993 is a culmination of over 40 years of design and development. I love it for that; others think that makes it boring. To each his own.
And yes, a good solid 993 can be had for around $30-$32K if you are patient and buy from a private seller. The widebodies (C4S$$$$ C2S$$$$$$$$$) demand a premium.
Great cars, through and through.

It was more opinion voicing than cutting down our cars. I was actually at the porsche dealership out here today for a while. Took some pictures of a 450,000$ carrera GT with my phone =P. Guy was looking at me like I was crazy
Anyway, for the most part, the porsche owners I`ve met have either been really cool and mature, or snobbish.. Seems like Z owners are either down-to-Earth, generally cool people, or borderline ricers.
Just my experience.

USMANASIF is totally correct, but I have to add my two cents. I've only driven Z's (05' roadster touring, 04' coupe, 2 84' 300zx, 80' 280zx), since I had my DL. I've known these cars best for their practicality, individuality (soul), and affordability. This car has evolved from where it first started. It isn't just a cheap ricer. Yutaka Katayama designed it out of inspiration. The 350z is the evolution of the 240z it is still true to its roots it is still practical, it is still an unmatched Japanese legend and champion car in the JGTC, and it is still the sports car for the poor man, If some arrogant guy driving in his Porsche finds a slight resemblance between a z and his 911 and has a problem with it, that means he is insecure. If you spend 80k and are intimidated by a car starts at 27k and find the need to point out differences and need others to validate your criticisms you don't deserve to be driving great cars like these (z/Porsche), you belong in a fashion club or something fruti like that.
my mom has a g35 coupe and my dad has a '01 911 and an '06 911-s and man for those that say they would rather have a Z over a 911 probably have never ridden in a 996-997 car ... absoulutly amazing ... one night my dad and I were cruising in the 996 suddenly he downshifted and all i can say is whiplash and a strain neck for the next three days. sweet car. dollar for dollar both the Z and the 911 are great cars
Is that supossed to be a sign of a great car is that when you downshift, your passenger's neck gets strained? 'Cause my friend does that to me in his Eclipse and I do the same to him in the Z. What is your point? Anyone can do that dumb type of stuff to their gears. I never thought it was a sign that you have a great car or something.
