Picking up the 350Z from Dealer
Hey guys, just curious how to insure the car when I go pick it up in September from the dealer? Do I have to do this ahead of time or do I get some sort of temporary 3 day insurance from the dealer until I goto the insurance company? I dont want to have it wrecked on the first day of driving.
Thanks
Thanks
That's a really good question zpower. I do my car insurance online with GEICO. When I get my VIN, I'm going to get a quote from them, then I'll try to ballpark around when I can take delivery on the car. Maybe 2 or 3 days before that, I'll go online and add the car to my policy. No idea about temp insurance from the dealer, anyone else know something about that?
Almost all policies allow you up to 10 days to add a new car. i.e., the new car is automatically covered by your current policy for up to 10 days, then you have to notify them. (maybe 5 for some companies), so youcould do nothing.
My preferred method, is to call the insurance company from the dealership, add the car and have them fax a new id card to the dealership for me, so there is no question that I have insurance when I roll off the lot. I use USAA, and they have great service.

First of all, if you are financing the Z, you will not be allowed to leave the lot without a paid 1 year insurance policy with collission and a $500 deductible maximum.
Second, I've never heard of an insurance company covering ANY new card for ANY period of time automatically. Beware.
I highly suggest you obtain your insurance binder and cards PRIOR to picking up your new Z. Most companies can do this in a few hours and FAX the info to the dealer.
The BOTTOM LINE is: Do whatever your dealer asks concerning insurance.

Note: This is my insurance company only, but I know of several friends through different companies that have almost the exact same policy.
My insurance company gives me 30 days coverage on a new car. I have to notify them within 10 days of recieving the car and I have the rest of the 20 days to pay the up-charge if any (what's funny though if they owe me money it typically takes 30-45 days, damn double standards). This is for buying a car, not leasing. I have no clue for leasing.
At the time of purchase, you have to show valid proof of insurance to your lender before signing the loan. for this one of 3 things can happen. 1. Your current policy (which you should have with you) should mention the 10/30day clause. 2. If your lender knows your insurance company and you have your current insurance card, your set as well. 3. A simple call to your insurance company or agent will also get you the car.

the first rule is, get your financing from a source other than the dealer, and then see if the dealer can beat it. They make a lot of money jacking up finance rates. I have purchased 19 brand new vehicles, heck, 2 since december. Only twice have I used the dealers financing, and on neither occasion did they need more than my current proof of insurance.
That being said, I still say call them from the dealer at the latest and get your card faxed there, just for your own piece of mind.
