One trick I picked up on a while ago is that I always try to park with my right side of the car next to a curb (or left side if backed in). Since most cars aren't carrying passengers (especially if it's a parking lot for an office complex) and most people don't back in to parking spaces, it's less likely that someone is going to put a door in your car if they park next to you.
It seems to work for me. The only body damage I have is a few rock chips on my front bumper.
