I have read a few threads about ppl having problems shifting smoothly in the 05's especialy to 1sr and 1st to 2nd. I am a 05 Z owner and i had the same problem as well. I took the car to the dealer and told them about the problem and it seems like i have too much play with the clutch. So they readjusted my clutch pedal and i am here to tell you, just doing that made all the difference in the world. I feel like i drive a brand new Z and a much better one at that. Now i almost have no play and it is so much easier to shift with out jerking the car. Whether you racing or just drving normally it is alot smoother to shift throuhgout all the gears. I just wanted to give my 2 cents in since i know there are other owners with that problem.

wait, explain your jerking problem again. When I shift out of 1st, my car tends to jerk if I don't ride the clutch for a sec or two. Is this similar to your problem?

I do think so, when i tried going from 1st to 2nd i would have to hold teh clutch pedal a bit longer ride it for a bit so the car would not jerk.

I assume your talking about the grinding from 1st to 2nd, well thats a downside for the 350z and a common problem here

no, I had my tranny replace already due to grinding. its just when I shift out of 1st its not smooth uless i ride the clutch. Maybe its just me.

well thats is not what i was talking about. It was just real hard to shift perfect without jerking the car but no more.

Were you able to tell that the clutch has too much play?
I mean did the engagement point change, so you could never get used to one point, and it would engage sometimes too soon, sometimes too late?

Is that what is meant by clutch play?

Or did they re-adjust the clutch engagement point (lower it?) since it is so high (pedal so far out)

Thanks! I am trying to see if I am affected. I do think it is difficult to go into 1st , but I wasn't sure whether it is generally with a sports car like that or whether there is a problem with the clutch.

give it a tiny blip from 1st to 2nd
that will help the synchros catch the gears better
try it with like 300rpm blip while shifting

i have an 06 and found that from 1st to 2nd, it grinds a little bit when the car is cold. once warmed up, the grinding goes away.

although it's a different manufacture, my brother has a 2005 s2000 and his 1st to 2nd is the same way as well as my buddy's 2004 nsx.

i think i have the same problem as well on my 05 but it doesn't bother me too much... i just assumed all Z's were like that~ =P

I know what ur talking about, just isnt a smooth shift as the other gears. Try keeping the rpm's lower and shift faster. Its hard to explain in text, but just being light on ur feet in the first to second shift, in my opinion it makes the car shift much smoother. hope that helped at all..

Just curious, lets say within the first few minutes of you starting your car, if you change from 1st to 2nd on a very high rev, will it grind more?

Higher rpms-->more noticeable grind?
