CA gas sucks. It's all ethanol-ish and crappy. There's a reason why all the tuning mags refer to it as "swill" or "pea soup".

Stupid EPA.

Guys, don't pay such attention to octane rating itself. They are different in different areas as those areas' location changes the variables involved in calculating octane ratings. This comment is brought up on these forums often. A few times, I have posted a link for a site that explains octane ratings in detail. Search and you'll find it.

The gist is, 93 octane in NC is the same as 91 in Denver (our premium). Or in other words, Premium grade gas will burn the exact same way no matter where you live. NC has a whole different set of altitude variables than CO does, since we are sitting a mile above NC.

Moral: Fill with premium and enjoy driving your car wherever you live.

That makes sense!

The higher the octance the less chance it will combust before entering the engine, which is why better performing engines prefer better fule, So it blows where it is seposed to

I got 91, 93, 94 and 110 in my city

The higher the octane the less chance it will combust early on the compression stroke. Gasoline combusting outside of an engine sounds like a catastrophic event to me.

I think there's more to it than just an octane number. 91 octane (premium in lots of states west) produces less knock in my Harley (10.75:1 comp) in high altitudes out west than 92 or 93 does here in Wisconsin. I always felt it had something to do with cylinder pressure being less in higher elevations. And we all know that cylinder pressure is one of the contributing factors to ping. Course, then again what the hell do I know?

Our computers are intelligent enough to detect knock (from lower octane gas) and adjust the map for that setting. So, running lower octane gas shouldn't hurt anything, except performance because your car won't be running the most aggressive maps.
