Default Sticking Trunk

Well I got my 03 Track over the weekend. I am taking it in to have them look at 5th gear, you have to force it to get it in 5th (no grind sound) and every other gear is butter...

But the general warranty is expired and I don't feel like spending the 75 bucks for the extended warranty if this is a know easy fix issue (which I think it is).

Basically when I pop the trunk it only comes up a 1/4 of an inch and is still latched. I then have to either push the hidden trunk button or the keyfob again to get the trunk lid unlatched and open. I have spied the two spring loaded assists and was wondering if those could be faulty?

Anyone out there experienced this before???

Your tranny should be replaced under warranty; I had the exact same condition when I bought my '03. You have a four year/60k mile powertrain warranty.

As for the hatch problem, there's an easy fix. Do a search on the "penny trick". Basically you put a few pennies under each of those springs and that's all it takes.

Funny you bring this up, I went to my dealer for this exact problem over the weekend. Basically, it's a problem with the struts that lift the hatch. Unfortunately, it's not covered under warranty, but maybe you'll get lucky like me and they'll put in '06 parts for you as a goodwill gesture. I've bought two cars from these guys though, so they kinda like me.

I think parts are like $100 though if you just want to try and do it yourself.

I had the hatch problem too. Took it in and they fixed it for free. There was a TSB on this problem. Search "NTB04042".

The penny trick worked for me for a while, but a few months later it started again... I think if you have a chance you should have the TSB done. It shouldn't be the struts, just the two small black-plastic covered springs.

My '03 Track Edition Z that I just got is in the shop for the exact two same problems! They tried to tell me that the car was just designed that way but I insisted they would not design a 350Z to not be able to shift into 5th gear!
