Default Hit A Deer / Got A Question

On the way home last night and sure enough bambi decided to take on the Z. The damage is actually not that bad but something odd did happen. My passenger air bag deployed but not the drivers. I was under the impression that when the air bags deploy they do so together and not just one or the other. Is this correct?

Attached a few pics just to show the extent of the damage and in one you can still see deer hair on the nissan emblem.

Well first off, glad to hear you are fine and didn't get hurt!!

As far as the airbag is concerned. You do have a lot of damage value wise, but it doesn't look like a lot of structural damage. This makes me wonder why the passenger side airbag depolyed in the firs place.

I personnaly feel that considering the damage you have to your vehicle that the airbag deploying could have caused more damage to the passenger than the accident itself. I am a big fan of airbags, but don't think they should come popping out unless absolutely neccessary.

There may have been something wrong with the passenger side resulting in premature deployment and the reason the driver side never deployed was that there was no reason to considering the amount of impact force on the vehicle. I have seen some people hit deer a lot harder than you did, so you are very lucky!

Sorry to hear about that man. At least the damage isn't too bad considering you hit a deer. I know a good bit of people that tore their front end up from hitting smaller animals. Airbag issue doesn't make much sense to me, I was thinking the same thing.

I'll have to watch our for deers when I'm out there this summer.

Glad to see that you are ok and the car isnt that bad. As far as the deer hair in the emblem, dont take it out. Insurance companies are very quick to call fraud or get dumb real quick, as far as paying out.
I am very surprised that your airbag blew, that definately doesnt look like a hard enough hit to set it off. But then again it is a plastic bumper so who knows whats going on under there. It may just be one of those bad luck things that happen, like the roll bar popping up in a bimmer after hitting a pothole.
Once again, glad to see its not worse, I've personally hit 6 or 7 deer in the last 10 years, and it gets bad quick..

I think he tucked the airbag in. Airbags don't deploy 10%. Its all or nothing.

Be glad it was only a deer and not a moose! Taller animals clear the hood and you take the full impact to the windshield. It is shocking to be driving along at night hauling a trailer at 65mph to discover deer eyes in your path.

It was a weak collision, so the airbag adjusted itself accordingly and reduced to the deployment amount!

That sucks man, glad you are ok, but that pic of the tuft of hair hanging out of the emblem is kinda funny.

deers are known to have shattered windshields...going through passenger compartment and killing all occupants.

It happened so fast and when the airbag deployed it fogged up the windows instantly so I really had no clue where I struck the deer. I guess it helped that I wasn't speeding at all either. Limit was 45 and I was actually doing 40 becuase I see deer on this road all the time. Just didn't catch this one

Anyway, yes JETPILOT I tucked the bag back in a little.

yes, but the percentages are much better hitting a deer than a moose or a horse. of course most people drive F350 diesel trucks around here so they just drive over the deer and since this is open range territory, the driver pays if you hit a cow. the real problem with deer is that people with trailers swerve and go off the road.

Hey, I hit a deer in my Z also. I did almost $10,000 of damage to it. My passenger airbag deployed, but not the driver's one, even though the deer hit the left front bumper.

My windows fogged up also, and I was unable to see out the windshield. That made it fun keeping the car on the road.
