Hit A Deer / Got A Question
I would sure hope that a sudden deceleration alone would not cause the airbags to deploy, because those guys with big brake kits would be in a world of hurtin!!
Seriously, what you said is sorta right, but it's the sudden deceralation in the form of a vehicle impacting something that causes the bags to deploy.

I'll have to watch our for deers when I'm out there this summer.

I beleive the sensors are in the bumper, judging from the pictures looks like the deer was tall so it landed on your hood when you clipped its legs, thus doing little damage to the bumper which is probably why the airbags did not go off.
think of it like this....its a little box, about the size of a match box, and there is a spring in it, and a metal piece at the end of the spring....and the spring is not that strong you can easily pull it with your fingers, with the deceleration the spring closes, and if the deceleration is like a lot faster then any brake can stop you, the spring closes and the metal piece at the end of the metal touches another piece of metal which sets off the airbags.

I also played deer hunter in my Z just 6 weeks ago and in broad daylight. Deer died before she hit the ground and only hit the passenger corner. Bent the hood, bumper area pushed in enough to pierce the A/C condenser, but no lens breaks and no airbags! "Only" $3000 in damages. The worst part of it all is that the SOBs still have my car...sheer incompetence...
Humm...couldn't find anything regarding no deployment if the seat is empty. But what the hell are those sensors under the seat doing?
I did find on page 1-11 where only one bag can deploy depending on where the impact occurs.

man that sux, but glad to see you ok.
thats gonna be pretty pricey as far as damage. i remember hearing that airbags run about $2000 each, the body damage isnt too bad.
hey now woudl be a good time to add a new aftermarket body kit or carbon fiber hood if you are into that. insurance is going to replace those parts anyway.
good luck with the damage. i wouldnt be surprised if the bill comes to 8 or 9k.

Hey guys dug this thread back up instead of starting a new one..
Anyway, it's gonna be a good 2-3 weeks before the body shop can get to my car so in the meantime I have been driving it a bit. Managed to clean up the damage so it doesn't look too sh!ty at night
Just noticed that my passenger seat belt pre-tension activated as a result of the air bag deployment. The belt tightened up so much that it totally cracked some pieces off of the plastic cover. I couldn't so much as pull any slack out of the belt. I ended up removing the anchor bolt down by the floor yet still can't get the belt to operate normally. Is there anyway to release the pre-tension on the retractor??
