Like the first few people said there diffrent cars. In my opinion the 350Z is a better value. Better looks (but thats jsut me) quicker 0-60. The GTI has more room for stuff and is more pratical. I was in a situation like yours a few weeks ago (if anyone remembers). The only way YOU can find out which car is better for YOU is to test drive both of them a couple times and see which one you like better.

These 2 cars are on the top of my list as well for my next car. I have driven both fairly extensively. Here are my thoughts.

Z
1) Looks like an exotic sports car inside and out.
2) Sharper edged. Feels more sporty. Really comes down to if you want a sacrifice practicality sports car (low, no room, poor visability, less refined).
3) More sporty exhaust note, a bit faster.
4) a little more $$

GTI
1) Extremely refined. High quality interior. Nice engine and gearbox but needs to be chipped by APR to get same performance
2) Just more practical, but looks like it too (more boring). Roomy, better mileage, better warranty, cheaper.
3) Expensive options like all german cars. Avoid major options to make a better deal.
4) tons of standard typical german safety stuff.

Do you want sporty/semi exotic looking or refined, conservative, safer, and more practical.

I don't have an 06 GTI.

But I did have a 2003 VW GTI 1.8T 5 speed. Now I have a Z.

I really did like the GTI a lot. It did have a couple of rattles, but it wasn't that bad. My Z has rattles now too.

I didn't have any electronics problems on my VW, the windows rolled up and down in a strong manner. No major problems, except the VW dealer threatened to void my warranty because I had a chip. THey're stupid.

Other than that MY GTi ran great and got super good gas mileage and had a lot of power.

GTI leather feels way more plush and soft than our Z leather. The Z leather seems like someone covered cloth seats in leather and called it a day.

Of course I went with the Z because I wanted the looks and the V6 engine, and the RWD.

I gave up room and some practicality and gas mileage. But it was worth it.

Now you are comparing a 23.5K GTI versus a 30K 350Z.

It's up to you, just drive both and decide. There's no way a forum can give you the feel of driving both cars and kicking their tires.

If reliability is a concern then drive the Civic Si and the 350z.

i currently have an 03 vw GTi 1.8t 5speed, bought it brand new, never had a problem, well the only problem i can remember is my clutch was squeeking and took it in to the dealer and it was the master cylinder (warranty) or something. i do have my door creek here and there but there is a solution for that i lub my door hinges every four months, i love my gti, where else can you stuff a dryer in the hatch and take it home, and still have a little quick car.

my second v-dub with no electrical, mechanical, window, no problems, my first one was a 99 2.slow golf

but.....

but.....

i do want a Z or a G, i'll have one soon

yes i know there are a lot of people who have had lots of problems with there vw, i haven't.

also i hear the new dsg transmission is nice

I heard the R32 is pretty quick though, since its small and lite. I just wonder if it could beat a 350.

+1 on the VW reliablity, my mom's passat is the first and last VW we will ever buy, so is my friends Jetta...
but +1 for the refinement, fit/finish got to give credit for that

just make sure you get extended warranty for VW or ditch it as soon as it runs out...

It's not that light as it is awd and it is 240hp if I remember that correctly. Two of my friends had them and I drove one. It was ok, but not nearly as much power as the Z.

It's not any lighter than a Z.
