the enthusiast model costs a few grand more than the base, but it seems like i can only afford the base. would i regret it without traction control? input please
Do I regret not having traction control? Not at all. I can't think of one situation where I've needed it or wished I had it. I've driven in ice, snow, and plenty of rain. You don't need TCS with an open-end rear differential. These "vdc/tcs saved my life" stories are touching, but seriously, there are other threads for that.

Is the torque ever a problem? Hmm yeah it can be a problem! I can't ever keep my foot out of it!!!! It's addictive. The torque curve from the vq35de is nice. You can do 28mph in 5th gear without lugging the engine. Nobody shifts that early even though the manual suggests it. If you want less torque to the wheels select a higher gear, it's that easy since all base models are manuals. The base model is also the lightest model available and it's plenty fast bone stock.

Go for it dude.

I am going to give a more general answer. If you live in an area with black ice, try to get a model with VDC. If you have significant experience with powerful motors with RWD you probably don't need to have TCS. However, if you buy an automatic and if the Nissan auto kicks down to redline, I would consider TCS. I have a manual so I don't know what the auto does at kickdown, but I have gone sideways with an LS1, auto transmission and no TCS!

Those of us with significant time on the road with performance cars, dirt bikes and street bikes have pretty much done every stupid thing in the book.

I have a base and I am happy. I don't want to be too dependant on technology where I would be speeding in the rain because I have VCD and TCS. Just don't speed in the rain. I do like the lok of the HID's coming up behind me on the higher models but this guy on here was selling a set to convert your headlights to HID's and it was about 300 bills. I had cruise control on my last car and it made my right foot restless so I stopped using it.

the 06 rims? i thought all the rims were the same till you get to track/touring? the ones that look like maximas are the older models no? besides, whichever stock rim you have, your gonna get sick of em eventually and want aftermarket wheels. especially if your gonna spend money on buying wider tires.

Just get the base, you'll be happy with it. With everything the '06 base comes with, it seems to be the current best buy.

There was a time before VDC so as long as you drive smooth and take the time to learn the car you'll be fine.

I believe u're referring to older models, the 06 model year features new 18" rims on the base standard and they are 10X nicer in appearance than the older ones IMHO

Hey, I love my car and if I would've gotten a more expensive model, I probably would have regreted it. Remember that the base model is the lightest car of the bunch and well driven it probably is the quickest. It is also the more simple of them which makes things easier during modding.

As for the rain, I can literally not go beyond 50mph on the highway raining. It is a very scary car in the wet. You have to go slow, period. I dont know if the traction control is helpful on this and frankly I dont care, my car is setup for the dry pavement. What you will most definately need is an LSD. If you cannot drive maybe the TC is for you. I love not having it. But thats just me. I live in the caribbean were the climate only has a variation ±15 degrees Farhenheit between seasons, tops.

I don't have anything to add but I NEVER have regretted buying my '05 Base. I pretty much feel exactly how everyone else does above that love their base. Especially for the TCS, VDC, HID,etc. I don't want any of that extra stuff personally. And I don't miss any of the other electronic gadgets on the other models either. Who really needs them and what's it going to cost you (time and money) when they fail? Never understood it
I also wanted to share a little quote I dug out of an old e-mail ...

"NO MATTER THE PRICE
NO MATTER HOW NEW
THE BEST SAFETY DEVICE
IN THE CAR IS YOU "
Burma Shave

Hope you can decide which model you want. It is purely a personal choice because no amount of arguing can convince most of us one way or the other. Good luck!

+1 to everyone, I got the 03' base and don't regret it at all, it just sucks not having cruise control sometimes but its not the end of the world. It keeps you on your toes. I added HIDs that I like better then the base and got the pedals and all that. Will add the nismo LSD sometime but no regrets at all, forget TCS, VCD crap, don't need it. Learn to drive the car. Good luck.

ok in response to some of you ppl...

i want the rims like looks like the maximas (they r off the enthusiast model) and yes i know they are older.. not 06.. i wasnt planning on getting an 06 ne way.. not enough cash

i do no plan on modding the car

do not plan on putting waaay wider tires, just anything that fits on the stock rim

someone said they cant go over 50mph in the rain in the highway? wtf.. elaborate.. cuz if thats the case, i will get something with traction.

i live in LA, so the weather is ****en wack.. changes daily.. one day its shine, the other rain, and all of a sudden it snows where it hasnt snowed in about 10 years

just get the base & buy those "maxima rims" from someone here. You can pick them up for like $1G!
If TCS was really needed, then those old american muscle cars would never have been able to drive the street. c'mon, the torque on a 454 motor is collosal and dwarf's the VQ, but they still drove rain or shine. Technology advances and people forget what life was like before it existed. Don't buy into it. Get the base, and be happy.
