to all those who say it jerks real bad when you dont downshift, im . mine jerks but not "banging my head on the steering wheel" or "breaking my neck" jerk.
i guess it just depends on what mood im in but i just pretty much do all the options.
i like downshifting, but again if im at speed-60 or above- i feel it takes way to long to slow down.
well let me ask this. if doing 60 in 6th, what gear would you downshift to?

The idea behind blimping is for the downshift to be completely unfelt. No jerking at all. Just an increase in RPM and a quick clutch in and out. Granted, it's for maintaining the balance of the car at the limit on a race track. But using it daily will help in doing better on the track.

If I'm going 60 in 6th, on don't downshift to slow down. If the engine breaking is not enough in that gear, I simply brake. Downshifting once to take off again or going to neutral if I have to stop.

Thinking about it, I usually stay in gear, clutch in, untill the car behind me his fully stopped.

I rev-match 95% of the time. I try to make it a habit not allow my syncros to do it for me. Heel-toe is hard for me, but I try to do that when I can, but usually I don't.

My steps:
Clutch in
shift to lower gear
blip the throttle
clutch out (slowly)

The entire sequence should take less than 2 seconds.

I understand how it works and was careful with it, yet it still started grinding in 5th gear. And it only started happening during a relaxed drive home on a clear freeway. There was definitely some kind of problem beyond just the driving.

ummm...from what i understand from reading about it and talking to people who have cars that are not a 350z and manual, revmatching shouldnt make a difference on the tranny.
and i understand the purpose behind it, just seems like most of you are doing a little more than a bit of exageration when talknig about the jerking.

Any time you downshift you should be revmatching. You must know how to do this if you want to drive safely and take care of your drivetrain.

The correct process is:

1. clutch in
2. throttle blip
3. gear change
4. clutch out

Don't switch #2 and #3.

You are mistaken. It's harder on the synchros if you don't revmatch, so that shoots your theory out of the water. Albeit we will always be using the sycnhros, it's just some things are much harder on them than others. Not revmatching will fry your clutch, and is also a potential safety hazard.

There should be no jerking when shifting gears. It should be just as smooth, if not smoother than an automatic.

I don't have a Z, but I always revmatch. I don't even think about it.

It's just easier on the transmission/clutch. I can't stand being with my friend in his S14 240SX. He has no clue how to drive standard. He just drops from 5th, to 3rd, and slips/pops the clutch out. Gives me whiplash everytime. Probably looks like a fool from the outside too.

Pretty sad. This guy drove around for about a year, without knowing he could put it in N, and let the clutch out at lights. I was with him and told him this, and he thought it'd stall. He's also convinced it's terrible to leave a car in gear while parked. So he goes and starts my friends Cavalier, and pops the clutch out after starting it, cause he figured it'd be in neutral. STALL!

#2 and #3 can be switched. It won't change a thing to the tranny anyways, because you've decoupled it from the engine.

I rev match at all times, imo its what comes along with driving a manual car. You won't even think about it after a while, it just becomes habit.

Yea it just takes a while to get used to, going from 6th on the freeway to 4th @70mph...you know the RPM will be high, but even for me i dont know what the perfect RPM is..i'd probably assume near 5k.
Me = n00b.

It's very worth it to keep practising the heel-and-toe until you're perfect. It's quite satisfying when you get the hang of it. After a while you'll do it all the time.

BSP it's funny to observe how enthusiastic you are.
I am a noob to this forum and yet I already know that you are an avid asian with small feet that does proper heel toe and loves japanese race drivers [I don't mean that bad, just observing]

Anyway, using synchros != noob unless you call your favorite Japanese driver (tsuchiya?? sorry forgot the spelling) or ayrton senna (the video in your heel-toe thread) also noobs!

Because you can see all of them doing heel-toe WITHOUT double clutching in all their videos where they drive regular cars.
Unless you double clutch you will be using your synchros even when you do heel-toe or blips on downshifts. You'll just save your clutch but not your synchros.

tell me the difference or umm, "WHAT" synchro is? is that when you clutch in and then downshift and then let your clutch out slowly to where your car slowly matches the RPM itself???..sorry, noob here....and that video is some crazy sh*t...hahaha...I'm asian, I wear 10.5EEEE ...haha....i'ma try that tonight...
as far as downshifting...I usually:
-clutch-in
-downshift
-blip throttle lightly (depending on how many gears I go down and what gear I'm on)
-let out clutch
-pass the half way of fully releasing the clutch, I throttle again to drive...(do you guys not throttle when you release your clutch, or do ya just release the clutch fully without touching the throttle pedal at all???)
