Default Transmission problems question.

Tomorrow I am taking my Z to the dealer so then can check out my tranny. Sometimes my tranny grinds when going into 5th and 6th even when the clutch is all the way in. Is there anything I can tell the dealer so they can definitely give me a new tranny? I want to get exhaust on my car so I would like for them to put a new one in before I do that. Any advice is highly appreciated so let me know. Thanks

it depends on the dealer. some will do it just based on you saying it grinds (probably b/c they're already familiar with the problem), some will need to replicate it. the best thing would be to take a drive with the tech/service manager while they try to replicate it, if they can't then you drive while they watch and show them how/when it happens. if you end up not being able to get it to replicate, then make them keep it over night and test it in the morning when the car is cold (since the grinding issue seems to be more prevelant when the trans is cold with most Z's). if that still doesn't work then all you can do is keep driving the crap out of the trans till it really does it all the time or breaks down. good luck.

Speaking from past experience (as I dont have a Z...yet) back in the day I used to have a 89 toyota MR2, I used to get grinding all the time (bad syncros) especially in the first 3 gears, I put some Redline Tranny fluid in it, and truth be told, NO grinding for the next 3 years I owned the car. Not sure if it will work in a Z...but worth a shot.

Well the reason why I would like to change it soon is because I wanna put my exhaust on. I don't want them tinkering with it in the future if the tranny does in fact need to be replaced.

I have the same problem. My 06 just started grinding when going into 5th, but not all the time. It only has 3100 miles on it. It seems to only do it the first time I shift to 5th after its been sitting a while.

Yeah. Maybe Nissan should incorporate a getrag transmission into the Z's that would be pretty sweet.

Hey blaine I have a question. Do you use royal purple motor oil for your tranny? Or do they make some tranny fluid as well? Forgive me if its a dumb question.

I don't think they'd be touching your exhaust either way. they supposedly only have to remove one of the cats to drop the trans so it shouldn't matter. I have HFC's and an exhaust and everything seems all good since they put in a new trans.

Since I bought the extended warranty, do I have to pay a deductible?

I had the same problem in my 03, grinding into 5th. The dealer said it was bad synchros and replaced the tranny.

not for a trans issue since its still covered under the standard powertrain warranty.

Well I bought my car used and its an 03. I think it was sold back in 2002 though. I'm not covered anymore right? Unless its through my extended warranty

powertrain warranty is 5 yrs/60k miles, so your engine, trans and driveline are still covered.
