I know that the base model z doesnt have vdc, lsd and all that stuff. But what does that exactly mean? Is it more dangerous to drive a base model z than the other models? Thanks!

 

I wouldn't say it's "more dangerous", but in some situations it could be less safe. The others would have advantages on slippery roads - like you could have in NY where you live - or if you were driving more agressively. Since we occasionally drive on slippery roads (eg., rain, sleet, sand/leaves/dirt on road, mud, etc.) the other models would have an advantage, even a safety advantage if you hit something unexpected. I'd consider going to the Enthusiast model (it's probably the most Z for the buck anyway).

Yes, if you do not have TCS it would be like the enthusiast model and touring automatic with TCS off. Since you do not have TCS and VDC it would be like driving a performance, manual touring or track with the VDC/TCS off. The only difference is all models except base have the LSD so I suppose that would make some difference vs the VDC and/or TCS button off.

It is still a very "driveable" car in the base configuration. But, do I think the added expense is worth the extra safety features? Yes, that is why I got the performance.

 

I have a base and haven't had any difficulties, even in heavy rain. All i can tell you is to not drive stupid. Some have on this board, and wrecked their cars with both their safety stuff on and off.

 

coming from an awd car with esp and even winter tires there is a tendency to rely on all these safety systems and overdrive the conditions. people have driven rear wheel drive cars for fifty years without the aid of electronic benefits such as vdc and tcs - you'll be ok, just don't overdrive the conditions: take it easy in wet roads and esp snow/ice. and get true winter tires if your area gets snow.

 

The Base comes without any of the electronic safety gizmos (technical term); i.e. LSD, TCS, & VDC. This means your on your own....as have been 99% of drivers over the past 100 years.

In addition, the Base does not have several other accessories....go to Nissan site for complete list.

If you are a conservative and/or experienced-go-fast-guy you can probably get along w/o the gismos.

My two cents is to get the Enthusiast model.....only extra 2Gs & you get LSD & TCS plus other useful stuff (another tech term).

Personally, the base would be fine with me, except it doesn't have cruise control. What $26,000 car doesn't have cruise control? Let's hope Nissan addresses that on the 2004 model.

Aluminum pedals and HID headlights and all the safety gizmos aren't nearly as important to me as being able to drive long, deserted interstates with a modicum of comfort.
