Default Trip computer screwed?

I was flying down the freeway the other day at about ~80 and decided to see what kind of mileage I was getting so I reset the readout and it said that I was getting 61.5 mpg!

Before I managed to get a shot of that it reset but the subsequent estimates had to be wrong as well -

Any thoughts on wtf is going on?

It weights the mpg estimate by the number of samples it has taken of your consumption rate. If you reset it at a traffic light that just turned green and floor it, it will tell you like .2 mpg. On the highway, it's first few samples after you reset it were obviously while you weren't burning much gas so it gave you a real high estimate. It takes some time for it to average out and become "accurate", but it still isn't very precise then, it just won't have the extreme swings.

Ah I see. I hadn't even seen such exaggerated numbers before so I was slightly concerned.
