the trick is to find a wide open road, get it up to 130+, reset and let off the gas and cruise. youll get good numbers, snap a pic and viola! youre done.
Ive got a pic of 56.6 mph at 76mph on my camera phone.

AC on, windows up > AC off, windows down.
The drag kills you. This is of course at a constant speed for an extended amount of time.
If the windows are either both up or down, then:
AC on < AC off (obviously)
This was proven on Mythbusters.

I can maintain ~ 36-37MPG on a good freeway that's not too hilly. I drove 16 miles and was in the 36-37mpg range. In the city, not too much congestion, I'm @ ~ 30. D!cking around on the freeway yesterday, and today, in addition to some congestive driving, I've dropped down to 27.7 with about 150miles since last refill.
I average about 475mi/16.7gallons nowadays.

Technically, anytime you coast while you are in gear your instantaneous MPG goes to infinite if you have a manual trans. since the rolling tires are what's keeping the engine turning, not gas. 99.9 is just how the mpg gauge shows "infinite". I test drove a BMW with a mechanical mpg gauge and whenever i took my foot off the go pedal, the needle would go straight past 40mpg and disappear.

I would cry if I got such low gas mileage with my car.. I get at the very least 400 miles each full tank. And I speed pretty frequently. How do you guys get such low mileage?
