Question Curb weight questions/discussion.

First things first. Curb weight is the weight of the vehicle with all fluids topped off. (full tank of gas, oil, lubricants, coolant, wiper fluid, brake fluid, standard equipment like the spare tire/jack/tools, etc etc...).

Gross weight is the legal/safe maximum the vehicle should ever weigh fully loaded with occupants and cargo. It's basically the design limits of the vehicle. It's a number us performance minded people could generally care less about because our vehicles will never be loaded to the point something will break or cause an unsafe situation.

My main question is, has anyone weighed their car, bone stock & full of fluids, and compared that weight to the number nissan claims? What were the results? You can still post your weight results if you weren't stock/full tank, but please specify relevant details. Please note the year/model also.

Most of the people I've seen who have weighed their car, do it with a partially empty tank. To me that seems counter-productive because it skews the numbers. The size of our gas tank is constant and the weight of fuel can be measured. It's like purposely dynoing a car to get inflated numbers just so you can feel good about it.

I'm curious because I have an 04.5 and I know things were added to the car mid year that should increase its weight, at least slightly. Yet the curb weight of the '04-'05 base models are both claimed to be the same as the '03 which is 3188lbs. More things were added to the base model in '06 and nissan adjusted the curb weight to 3339!!! That's a 151lbs difference!! What did they add in one year that weighed 151lbs??? Did they wait to adjust the curb weight numbers until it came standard with the 300hp rev-up motor??? That would be a tacky thing to do.

If you have not weighed your car, but you do have a base model, I'm also interested in your GROSS weight. (the number I said we generally don't care about). I'm just curious how different our numbers are from year to year. Specifically I'm interested in the years I don't have (03, early 04, 05, and 06) The gross weight of my 04.5 is listed at 3815lbs. The number is on the sticker that's on the inside of your door frame and it's easy to check. These numbers could change if they make changes to the suspension, engine, etc.... not just from changes in the curb weight, so it's not a perfect comparison, but I'm still curious.

Thanks in advance for any positive additions/corrections/contributions to this broad/general topic.

Sometimes racers weight their cars at the track. The weights are posted in the racing forum.

Thanks mc... same gross weight but I suspect we have a different curb weight.

I know that david, but I'm not really interested in race weight, even though racers are the ones most likely to weigh their car. They're also the ones most likely to weigh their car with a bunch of aftermarket parts, lightweight modifications, and a quarter tank of gas.

I'm looking for meaninful data to compare to the numbers nissan claims. Surely someone has done this before. I guess I'll have to find a place to weigh my own car and see.

’05 Track weighted at 3413lb

With me in it -200lb
With track wheels and tires (200lb? vs OEM xxlb?)
With no spare, no jack, no mats, nothing in the hatch
With 3/4 of fuel
With aftermarket Y-back

My local tuner probably has some scales and I could get there and weight the car fully loaded. I’ll give them a call.

I’ll try to do it with my gf’s ’04 Performance too. Hers is bone stock.

Curb weight is pretty much meaningless to track guys. It's good to know it if is you plan to do some weight reduction, but that’s all.

Cars are usually weighted in race trim with half the race fuel load for corner weighting purposes. It minimizes the effect of the variable fuel load while the car is on the race track.

cool kolia...

So 3213lbs without you in it. No worries about the rims since the track rims came with it and are already factored in, and the rubber shouldn't make much difference(or not???). no spare/jack/tools/mat and that's an easy 40lbs to add back in. So 3253 + 1/4 tank of gas which is roughly 25lbs.. (how much weight do you think you saved from the aftermarket y-pipe? I'll ignore it for now)... so a grand total of 3278... The '05 track is supposed to have a curb weight of 3225, correct? That's a difference of over 50 pounds???

That would be cool. That would probably be the easiest to compare to what nissan claims. hehe that's cute you both have Z's.

Exactly! I do plan on doing weight reduction, and while it's not critical, it would be nice to know if nissans numbers are accurate or not. For some reason I doubt they are. I have a feeling nobody will closely know their cars weight unless they spefically have it weighed, or unless we come to a general consensus..

That would make perfect sense.

2003 Track

It weighed in at 3195.

This was with me in the car. I am @ 190 lbs so I guess mine is pretty light. I do have the spare tire and all the lower filler material in the hatch area removed. Only thing sitting back there is a 10 lb nitrous bottle which wieghs just over 20 lbs with all attachments.

Going to the strip tomorrow night (or tonight however you want to see it) and they have a scale so I'll check it out. I think Il'l be taking my spare/jack out. The only mod I have is a different headunit and one Sparco Torino.

2005 Track btw. Stock track rims with BF Goodrich KDW-2's in stock size.

He also mentioned he has an aftermarket y-pipe back, the stock one is pretty damn heavy. The Nismo saves approx. 10 lbs, the Borla supposedly upwards of 15-20 lbs. That should be factored in as well, at least a few lbs anyway for the muffler and mid-pipe.

Also, if he's talking about racing rims, they could easily weigh less than the stock Rays, which were around 18 lbs each. Could be worth another 5-10 lbs depending on the size and weight of those rims.

FWIW, I weighed mine last night at the strip. Stock Track rims, aftermarket tires (same size), no jack/spare, 1/4 tank of gas, Sparco Torino driver seat, OEM Passenger seat w/ side airbags... 3223 I believe it was. So, in my best guestimation, the 03-05 models were underrated in terms of weight.
